I use a tone generator on my laptop and tune it by ear.

I had a little Radio Shack 9 volt plug in tuner but it never worked too well. Ear tuning for me is the best way.

Yeah, I do it by ear also, but what you can do is buy a chromatic tuner. the notes (from low to high in strings) are

E
A
D
G
B
E

You can tune the low E, then you can go from there by ear. just play the note i specify on the string you've tuned already.

the low E matches the A at the 5th fret
The A matches the D at the 5th fret
The D matches the G at the 5th fret
The G matches the B at the 4th fret
and the B matches the E at the 5th fret

hope this helps.

When I don't tune by piano or by fret, I use my Strobe tuner by Ovation that I bought in 1978 for $35. I haven't seen one similar to that since then.

It's extremely accurate, doesn't need tone tune, but simply vibration enhanced by light. Tuning in the dark and a noisy environment is no problem.
