The real purpose of a religion in the first place (according to the Bible) was to take care of orphans and widows. Religion was intended to be a vehicle for one's spirituality. It's not religion's fault that it's followers have exploited it to the point that it now has absolutely nothing to do with spirituality and everything to do with dogma. So yes, the answer is yes. Fanatics have been created and it's original purpose is lost forever.

ummm - yeah.
there's a war going on right now that was started by religious fanatics - in fact most of the wars on the planet were caused by religious fanatics.
The real purpose of religion? you mean what the creator intended or what man has warped it into?
I feel the real purpose was to keep man in a close loving relationship with the higher power (or whatever you want to call it) ...but man has turned it into a way to control the masses through fear.

Hmm, well I do think it creates a lot of fanaticism, but its real purpose was always to try and explain things and keep people under control and not too think so much. So, I think it does its purpose pretty well.

Religion doesn't create fanaticism. People do.
There are fanatical ecologist.
There are fanatical animal rights activists.
There are fanatical shoppers.
There are fanatical eaters.
There are fanatical drivers.
There are fanatical sports enthusiasts.
You name it. There are fanatical people involved in it.
