i'm having a hell of a time finding these statistics for my brother. i'm a little concerned about his drinking and fear he may drink and drive. when i told him "i don't really care of you drink, just don't drink and drive" he challenged me, saying "bah, i'd really like to see the statistics of alcohol related car accidents vs. car accidents caused by sober people. i bet alcohol-related accidents are just a tiny little percentage... most accidents are just caused by people being stupid." all i've been able to find is that in 2005 39% of all fatalities were alcohol-related... but i'd really like to find the percentage of ALL car accidents caused by alcohol, including non-fatalities. can anyone help me? point me in the right direction? anyone know it off-hand? thanks guys :)

I don't have the answer for this but I'd highly suggest that he take a ride along with your local police department and let them discuss it and possibly even show him the aftermath. Maybe he could also talk to E.R doctors about drunk driving since they see this every single day. I don't really think it's about statistics when all it takes is one to ruin your life and the people you kill.
We're dealing here with a case of a teenager who was driving drunk and killed a pregnant woman and two of her kids. The husband was also in the car as was a younger child and they got to watch this happen.
The teenager admits that drinking caused the trouble but it's too late now, he has killed four people and destroyed a family as well as his own life. I know of a person who is still in debt many years later and probably always will be trying to pay for what he caused in an impaired driving accident which killed a friend of mine.
Ask your brother how he would feel if you were killed by someone who was driving like that. The problem is though that people and especially younger people will rationalize their attitudes to fit what they want things to be and won't listen until it's too late. You could throw a hundred stats at him and he will still probably rationalize it to suit his needs.

Good luck to you.

As said, Drunk drivers, when they have their collision, regularly kill a non-intoxicated driver and often the passengers. If the drunks only killed themselves or put themselves 100 ft back into the bush, we would be less concerned. The penalties are to punish the guilty and try to persuade the guilty who have not yet been caught, that it is not worth while to drive drunk. If Granny had come out of the median and then killed a pedestrian, she would have faced just as serious charges. The same for the driver not wearing the required glasses. Many times the drunk driver gets off because the accident resulted from someone trying to avoid the drunk and killing him/erself. So how much did you blow over?

I believe MADD shows that 46% of all traffic accidents were caused by drunk drivers.Incedently, that statistic shows more than half of all traffic accidents were caused by sober drivers. Our president called a much smaller percentage a mandate from the people!
