All the war needs is a good publicist.
If it is a war fought on multiple continents than the American Revolution was a World War, but it had a lousy publicist.

Well in each "World War" there was a dictator who picked on a certain counrty, race or religion. And did not listen to there citizen's needs, while only concentrating on militaristic things. Wow, does this mean we are in a World War already? Seems like it doesn't it? Bush seems like the Dictator, setting up US military in Iraq and building a missile defense in Eastern Europe, HMM. I wonder whats up with that. And what happened to disaster relief when katrina hit and that tornado in the mid-west. Terrorism has been going on for thousands and thousands of years and will never be stopped, and almost every president makes up an axis of evil or atleast one country to be called evil. We all live in a F****D up world now adays!!!

the war on terror will never qualify. The war on terror is a beefed up police operation that is out to stop arsonist and murders. To qualify for world war status nation states and their militaries must be involved fighting one another. Otherwise the war on drugs or pedophiles could come under the term world war. Also to qualify all the continents with populations on them must be involved some how whether by being a combatant or by supporting the combatants directly.

I don't think there are any. I think it is just that if there are enough forces on both sides from all over the world then it would be called that.
Both of the world wars that have occurred, happened because of the treaties between countries. When one was attacked another would move in to help them out because of their treaty and then when they retaliated an ally of the other side would come into the war as promised by their treaties.
There doesn't seem to be those types of treaties anymore.

A world war must be between two or more superpowers and in dozens of countries.
The axis of evil would not apply.
