I'm learning guitar by scratch, and the way I learn things is by writing down "everything" I need to know about learning something and then going to down the checklist learning it.

Can someone give me a list of "everything" I need to know about learning to play the guitar, starting with the most important things one needs to know first? Please don't leave anything out.

Thank you!

1. Learn as many chords as you can. Practice diagramming them on paper and keep them for your own personal reference.

2. Learn chord progressions, such as from G, C, A7, D, and G.

3. Learn runs--simple three or four note spreads between two chords. Think of Johnny Cash's song, "I Walk the Line."

4. Buy a beginner's guitar book having music theory and learn to play by notation, and much later, by tablature.

5. Practice rhythm and strumming techniques--both striking the fundamental bass tone and strumming down and then back up. Practice fingerstyle methods of right picking different strings in chord backup.

6. Keep your instrument clean and in good shape. Treat it better than you would your own body. Keep your hands clean and dry while playing. That cuts back on oily residues.

7. Watch other guitarists and their technique or style. Copy their methods up to the point of forming your own style.

There are more, but this should get you started.

Learning to play an instrument is more of a hands-on experience. You can write down things like which strings are which notes, chords and chord progressions, and tabs. But that is about it. Try googling "free guitar lessons" and see if you get any websites that teach guitar. But you should really get a teacher in person. It sounds like learning guitar is going to be very different from what you are used to.

I've been gambling track for 12 years and ive just about taught myself the whole lot, in conjunction with a few aid from my historic guy. Everything else used to be simply study. the opposite day i walked right into a track retailer and i used to be within the guitars/amp division and bought 6-7 guitars. the disadvantage is that i dont paintings there, however i do know greater than the men who do paintings there.

You can find structured courses online that offer just as much as a physical teacher would: ElectricGuitarTutorials.com and JustinGuitar.com both offer free tutorials that you can learn with.

There's so much you need to know! But, especially:
CAGED (it's a system) Scales and chords
The most common open chords
