Too far in the wrong directions, not far enough in the right directions. Too many compromises. I say,try it again.

I think initially, we DID go overboard with our liturgical reforms. I look at the music being composed for the mass in the 70's and I often cringe. What were we thinking, singing some of that stuff as worship?? But I also see it as a response to a sudden freedom of expression that we didn't have before. Think of a young person out on his or her own for the first time.

The pendulum swung too far one way after Vatican II. I have a feeling it'll swing a bit too far the other way before it lands at a more desireable center. A lot of good came out of Vatican II - we need to now educate ourselves, our liturgists, our priests, and our congregations in how to best use these reforms.

Fr. Andrew Greely is an odd bird. He's one of those "let your conscience be your guide" people.

Men like Andrew Greeley look at people like me, who enjoy the Tridentine Mass, as if we were criminals.

He makes fun of people like me. Calls us young fogeys and neo-caths. I'm no schismatic. I embrace my faith. What ever comes from Rome. But I love the old ways. JPII gave us the Ecclesia Dei - which made the Tridentine acceptable when approved by the bishop. Greeley would tell you otherwise.

He should spend less time writing novels and more time studying scripture.

Vatican II is just fine. It's what people did with it. THAT is where things went wrong.

So many problems came out of people's misinterpretation of what happened. Largely due to the media spin.

Fr. Greeley speaks the truth. The problem was: Vatican I never wrapped-up or had a proper ending. The wars got in the way. Vatican II was a mess and if Vatican I had re-convened and finished their work, there would not be the liturgical mess that you are seeing today

Sequel is never better than the original.
