I'm a twenty year old guy and the woman who cuts my hair said I should consider getting highlights. I told my girlfriend about it and she thought it would be a great idea. I don't know about it. My hair is somewhere around a medium brown and about an inch long on top with the side cut pretty short and I usually wear it spiked up. Do you think that it would be a good idea?

Sure it's very common for men nowadays to get highlights done. I do suggest to go a honey/caramel shade being that it is summer and if you go light blond they will get lighter with sun exposure and if you go swimming where chlorine is added they will lighten a lot, ocean water will lighten them as well but not to the degree of chlorinated pools.
They'll grow out fast in case you're not satisfied with them.

Sure, why not. Just remember that highlights gradually get lighter over time with exposure to sunlight. So you might want to get something subtle the first time around.

I think you should try it, you will like the change. And besides your hair will grow fast so you can change back to your previous look.
