Jesus died a long time ago, and isn't looking through anyone's eyes. If you're trying to say that we're supposed to be like Jesus, well, there have been a lot of people throughout history whose example should be followed, but you don't see anyone insisting that John Lennon is still around.

That's the very definition of the Church. We are the Body. He is the Head. I believe it was St. Anselm that referred to the Church as "The Second Incarnation" - filled with the Holy Spirit - who is the Lord and "giver of life" (according to the Creeds) at the First Pentecost.
