Stay away from French. Because of the fact that France was a great world power in the past (and French still is considered as an important diplomatic language, even if now English is first), many people have a tendency to exaggerate the beauty or usefulness of French. It is also because French is associated with luxury items (perfume, expensive wines) that people who learn it feel special about themselves... Most of that is snobism. Compared to Spanish or Mandarin, French is spoken by a very small number of people. Actually you already speak the most useful language, which is English. Any other language you may want to learn depends on your interests. I, for instance, love Italian opera, so for me it is Italian. I do not like the sound of Spanish, which is why I would never learn it.
That said, if you are a young person looking for an edge in life, I think that the coming century will be the century of China, so I would definitely say that it would be a huge advantage for you to learn Mandarin.

Actually, the most spoken language in the world is Mandarin Chinese... the second is english, followed by Hindi.
As far as French goes - it really depends on why you want or need to learn a foreign language.
French is a beautiful language, but it is not the easiest for native english speakers to learn - I think spanish or german would be eaiser - but only bc I learned them both fairly quickly. In fact, german was super easy!!! But, we all have different abilities when it comes to languages.
dig around on the net and find samples of people speaking different languages and pick one you like. Or, try to decide where you might like to visit, live, or do buisness in the future and focus on that countries language (s).

Contrary to popular belief, Spanish is NOT easier to learn than French. I speak both languages and can attest to that as a fact. It depends on what you want to do with the language. Much more Spanish is spoken here than French, but that's no reason not to study French. You should check out some software programs from your library in both French and Spanish, just listen to them, then determine which suits you best. Bonne chance and buena suerte.

It depends how you define "best." If you're referring to the most commonly spoken foreign language in the US, then no. If you're referring to the most wide spread spoken language, then no. But those of us who speak it love it! If you're in the south of France, there's no other language to help you get by.
