Like the 1st 2 posters I don't own a Tiburon, unlike those 1st 2 I'm not going to sit here and make up stories either. No car crumbles in an accident and there is a 5 yr bumper to bumper warranty even if the car did require a repair. The RX-8 I would not touch, its very beautiful and handles well, but the rotary is honestly the worst engine ever designed in modern times. Mazda has actually recalled and replaced several thousand of these motors, not to mention they swallow a quart of oil every 1000 miles get less then 20mpg and don't have much power for the price. The Tiburon is a pretty nice sporty car in the lightweight class (not a true sports car), I would choose the V-6 engine. You may also consider a used Celica or Accord coupe, there's really not much available in this market unless you want a 2-seat convertible...seems to be many more of them available now. Hyundai sells about 20K Tiburon's a year and they are known to be reliable so if you like it, buy it!

I have a 2003 Tiburon bough new in July 2002. In Oct. 2002 in a accident, rear ended and shoved into another car and was more then just a bump. They are not cheaply made and the car did better then larger cars do in an accident. I now have 43,000 miles on it, drive it harder than most people will drive it, have the V6 2.7L engine and had it up to 127MPH and still going. I get 24 to 30 MPG depending on speed driving (24 MPG on interstate driving at least 80 MPH) The engine is small but is faster than some small V8 engines. I have not had any major problems, it does not use oil and yes, if to do over I would buy the car again. This car is not for my major transportation, just a toy for me so I don't care if I tear it up and must say the car is doing great. So again would I buy another Hyundai, yes I would. One more thing for people who think the Tiburon is a light car.. check it out, they are not.. it is 300 pounds lighter than my bigger car.. per square inch it would be heavier than my big car.

I own a 2003 Tiburon GT and bought it December of '05. I got it with 45,000 miles and it now has 89,000 and I've had a few problems with it but nothing too major, mostly just an inconvenience. My air conditioning stopped working and it cost me over a grand to get it fixed, right after that my passenger window motor went out and a few months later my drivers side one went. Also, shortly after the AC broke, my sunroof fell off track. The 10 year/100,000 mile warranty does NOT transfer to the second owner, but you do get a 6 year/60,000 mile warranty, so dependent upon the mileage on the car if you're buying used it's not bad. Mine is an automatic with the sport shifter and I like that better than the manual because they are known for having a lot of clutch problems. I also drove my car the 900+ miles from just north of Philadelphia, PA to the Savannah, GA area then up and back again and she's still kicking so I guess that's good. If there are other cars your looking at I would probably steer away from Hyundai just because they're generally poorly made cars and especially a GS won't get very good resell value, but good luck!

Wow, I own a 2001 Tiburon 2.0 engine with 112,000 miles on it. It has been a wonderful car so far. No major repair even while under warranty. Good gas mileage 28-30 MPG plus It is fairly quick and fun to drive Reasonably price too. It is a fun sporty car NOT a sports car.
07 Tiburon GS msrp 16,695 to 22,085
07 Mazda RX-8 21,435 to 31,070
I would must rather spent $9,000 less than the RX-8 and the only thing 10 times anything, is the rx-8 fan being childish.

I own a 2003 Tiburon GT and I have not had any major problems with it.
If you do your research like me you'll discover that there can be issues with them, like any car...
There are many reports of bad clutches (most likely user error) and one that I have run into...bad blinker relay!! It makes my blinker stay on all the time whether the car is on or not about 2% of the time, however if you just keep the blinker on it will start blinking again and can be turned off lol.
Some other little things, I've sheered 2 bolts while replacing headlights because it's cheap steel, but that's how the cost of the vehicle stays low.
Just an FYI, the warranty which is a WONDERFUL thing, does not transfer. It's 1st owner ONLY. Now the dealer may include their own warranty on the car, however, the Hyundai warranty is only 1st owner.
Overall it's a great car, you will probably love it if you buy it. I love mine!

have a 2002 tiburon 87k miles and a 2005 elantra 30k miles i will be the 1st one ot tell you hyundais are for the most part good reliable cars. if you like the style of the tiburon go for it juts don't plan any 4 person road trips haha the 2 won't fit in the back.... but if your looking for speed... you need the elantra . i am not sure why the put the lower torque engine in the "sportier" car but they did but i like both my cars i have made my tiburon a show car (lambo doors neons interor lights body kit .. u know the works) but it is definatly not built for speed.....

I own a '97 Tiburon and it is still strong.
So far my experience with it has been pleasant. It's a heavy car so don't expect mind-blowing acceleration, but because of it's tough body and rather low centre of gravity, the Tib can take turns pretty well.
Put in a few budget handling mods such as bigger rims/better tires, adjustable or any sports suspension and better brake pads. it should then handle like a dream.
If you crave power, then there are always turbokits or superchargers which you can bolt on.
There is potential in the Tib, but we're just not spoilt for choice unlike makes such as Honda or Toyota whom have various makes of aftermarket parts for them.
My suggestion would be to get the 2.7 V6 GK in manual transmission.
Oh, and don't forget the sunroof :)

Bought a 2001 Tiburon in March of 2001. 68,000 miles and going strong.Have gotten several speeding tickets with it. LOL. Warranty is worth at $2000 on the open market. Tires replaced at 40,000 miles. Transmission is good. It is also my third Hyundai.. Convinced girlfriend to buy one too. We have matching Tiburons.

A lot of people look at hyundais as crap...I personally don't know, but they do have the best warranty around. I like the design of it, but performance wise they are seriously lacking! but the bottom line is that you should get what YOU want.
p.s. with the tiburon, you are going to have a lot of chumps with civics tryin to run you.

Definitely the Tiburon. I used to have one and loved it and never had any problems. Plus the Tiburon has more horsepower and torque so it's faster. In my opinion the Tiburon is better looking than the Celica also.
