Linux is known for being fast and easy to use. Many people use it because it is more stable. It does not break down and there are few viruses and other problems. Linux is most common on servers. You can install Linux with Windows XP at the same time, I don't know the difficulty of this. The most popular distro (version) of Linux is Ubuntu. I run it as a Live CD (Visit ubuntu.com for the details). The problem: Programs for Windows don't work on Linux. Linux is good if you are just doing Internet stuff.

There are a lot of answers you'll get for this, because like everything else, people have varying opinions about Linux.

In my opinion, Linux is weaker than Windows is as a desktop OS, but it is much, much better as a server software. So if you want to have access to internet services, compilers, etc., at home, then you will want to be using Linux.

The desktop portion of Linux is actually called XWindows, which you can customize the look/feel of to an extreme, which is nice. However, Linux is not software-compatible with Windows, so if you are used to Windows and you are just looking to be able to use your computer to run the same software that everyone else runs, you won't find Linux to your liking. This is why I recommend keeping a computer around with Windows on it for games, multimedia, and running MS Office applications, where a Linux box is going to be lacking at best.

If you are used to Windows, I can't recommend Linux for you. If you are used to Unix and want to run a free implimentation of it, then Linux is for you.

that depends on alot of things... like the version your downloading,,

now you being new to linux I would go for the easiest to install and learn now you will get ppl telling you what they think is the best, I have tried several versions, and my choice for a new user would be as follows

the best supported versions are (in order)

Ubuntu 7.4 6.6, 6.10,
Kubuntu 7.0
Suse Linux 10.2

now here is the best part, You don't need to install it on your hard drive, the above versions will run from the cd's this is called live cd, you can run all the software from the cd, as if it was installed,

if you have broad band it will find the modem and all you do is click on the web browser and your on the internet...
now the next thing is you can download all the manuals for the program, and software of the internet, you can get the step by step tutorials the same way,

so if you keep in touch I will guide you through what you need to know

the links below will take you to the download sites
