While most ferries go out of Long Beach and San Pedro (Catalina Cruises, Catalina Express), Catalina Ferries goes out of MDR. www.catalinaferries.com

The only boat service that I know of to Catalina goes from either San Diego or Terminal Island.

yes there is one company that does operate out of Marina
Del Rey (its still a newer company then their competitors
who are more well known but they have now been in business
about 4 years (the first year they had borrowed a ferry
from a Boston Ferry company the boat they used was called the Gray Lady II
which they used until they were able to order their
own boat which is now in use
I used this company before and I liked their services
back there

Check out Catalina Ferries. I know the one that is a hydrofoil awesome out of Newport beach.
