For dancing, try Webster Hall, which is an 18 and over club. Also, check out the Central Park Summer Stage schedule. There are free concerts there all summer long, and a few that you have to pay for. (This Saturday is Joss Stone and Common.) And if you're willing to get up crazy early, the Today show and Bryant Park has free concerts every week during the summer. (Last week it was Lily Allen.) Also, Shakespeare in the Park is starting up soon, which is free--though you do need to wait on line for tickets first thing in the morning. If you don't want to pay an arm and a leg to see a Broadway show, try going for rush tickets. Some shows have lottery systems, where you show up at the box office about an hour before the matinee show and put your name in a box. If you win, you can get two tickets for half the price. (I just saw The Drowsy Chaperone for $25. And if you want laughs, check out Avenue Q.) For really good burgers, try Burgers and Cupcakes on 23rd St. Then on Thursday, go across the street to the Chelsea Cinemas to see classic movies for $6 and possibly win fun prizes in their raffle. And as long as you're in Chelsea, go to Chelsea Piers on 23rd Street on the West Side Highway. They've got bowling, ice skating, mini-golf, all kinds of stuff. For comedy, there's NY Comedy Club, Comic Strip Live, Gothic Comedy Club, The Laugh Factory--all good alternatives to pricier clubs like Caroline's. Then there are street fairs just about every weekend. Check out www.twi-ny.com for a list of what's going on this week in New York. It lists movie screenings, art gallery openings, cultural events, fairs, everything. Have a great time while you're here!
Oh! One more thing: For shopping, go to the website www.sheckys.com. They have these 3-day shopping events (the next one is at the end of June) where you pay $10 (or $30 if you want the fabulous goodie bag) to get in, and inside are all these vendors and designers selling their stuff at seriously discounted prices. We're talking jewelry, clothes, books, makeup, all kinds of stuff. It's usually held at the Puck Building on Lafayette St., which is huge! Definitely worth the price of admission.
