I'm 22 years old, I'm currently a customer service rep with an insurance company I have been working with since I graduated HS. I enjoy the job, but the income potential only goes so far, and I'm always looking to the future.
I love the job because of customer interaction, I love helping people and giving them an experience that makes their day. It makes me feel good and makes going to work every day a pleasure rather than a hassle.
I want to work a job like this my whole life, but there is little room for advancement. Higher up positions decrease customer interaction, getting rid of the part of the job I love. I don't want to make mega bucks, just enough to own a house and support a family, while being able to go home and see my family every night.
What kind of careers fit this profile? The only thing I can think of is banking but I dont even know if I am thinking correctly. I'm willing to go to school, I just need to find the right path first!

Thanks for all the advice...I can't really pick a best for this one since there are a few different choices. I was kinda leaning towards banking / sales so this advice kinda pushed me over the edge towards sales...I just needed to hear it from someone other than friends and family.
So...I'm gonna start by shadowing a Sales position with my current employer and see where I go from there. A teacher sounds nice but almost scares me...I know I'm young but...kids are crazy these days! I'll put that one on the back burner for now. Financial advisor or personal banker sounds decent but I'll shadow the sales position first. Store manager would be kind of...frustrating...and the hours CAN be terrible so I'll give that a thumbs down. If I enjoy the sales job within the insurance company I will probably pursue personal sales once I'm done there. Surf shop and drag queen wouldn't do well where I live =-P
We will see what happens! Again thanks for all the advice!

Have you considered becoming a teacher?
It seems to me that you really, REALLY like the interaction in your job. if you become a teacher, you have the opportunity to work with people everyday. Depending on where you work, you can get a pretty decent pay, and most schools (Elementary, Middle, and High Schools) allow you to change what you would like to teach. You have to go to college, but depending on where you live, you might not have to go for too long.
Lastly, remember that grade schools have nights off, and summers off. Plus vacations and holidays. You will get to spend a lot of time with your family.

Well there is many things you can do. The first thing that comes to mind is sales. Since you enjoy and have that customer service interaction skills you would probably be a good sales person. Another position would be a personal banker or financial advisor these positions both require alot of interaction with people on a daily basis. Another position that comes to mind in the banking arena is a relationship manager. You would be require to interact with people everyday as well.
Good Luck!

I was in the same situation. Have you thought about upper-level store management? You could be in charge of customer service, visual displays/promotions, etc. It would allow lots of customer interaction.
You could also go into personal sales. Cars, homes, etc. are all major purchases which require one-on-one customer service.
You may also consider teaching. You should be able to volunteer or work as a sub through your local school district even without a degree (to see if you like it.)

Maybe Internet Support (which is support for online problems over the phone). They usually start pay at about $17. Or anything to do with computers or just Technical Support. They pay more than most call centers.

I would say sale. You may need a business degree and if possible, a MBA. You will need to be sociable and talk to many customers, and explain to them what you have and why they can make good use of it to solve their problems, and so they need to buy from you.
