The vet has done a scratch test to see if it could be a form of mange. The test was Negative for that. He's on flea meds. I'm not sure what else could be causing his hair loss. We give him a bath once or twice a month. I don't think it's just dry skin. My puppy is a 17 week old Weimaraner.

Our chocolate lab/Weimeraner mix does have bad dry skin--they're prone to it. He may be a little young, but when our dog was about 3, she started losing her fur to the point that she had a bare tail. We had the vet check, and it turned out that she had thyroiditis. She takes medicine for it now, and has the thickest, softest coat you can imagine.

We suggest that you have him re-tested for mange. The scratch test pulls tissue from a very small area, and the mites simply might not have been where the vet was looking. We had this happen with one of the dogs at our shelter. She tested negative one day and positive the next.)

If it's not mites then the dog may have a nutritional problem (such as not enough folic acid), or may be allergic to something. (Dogs manifest allergies in their skin rather than their nose and eyes.) We'd suggest putting the dog on a diet rich in fatty acids.

Your dog may just have allergies. Sometimes the vet can't even find out what they are. Your dog may just need to be put on prednisone or even benadryl daily. It could be an allergy to a type of food or something in the air.

I have a Maltese and i had a very similar problem. It turned out that he was allergic to the food i was giving him, so i changed his food and he was all better. so you might want to look into that.

It's just nature. It might grow back, but if it doesn't take it to the vet. Good Luck!
