The egg. Whatever laid the egg was hen like, but not a full hen. That is of course, if you believe in evolution.

I have scrutinised this question before (particularly boring driving lesson I think it was!) And the egg would have come first. You've seen dinosaurs (hopefully on telly, not in real life. Naturally.) Anywho, dinosaurs have these strong legs and silly little arms, and if you've ever seen a new chick without its feathers yet they look remarkably similar (they have the scaly feet and beak and usless fluffy arm-like wings, so they are like fluffy dinosaurs - cute really!) Anyway, the egg came first because the dinosaurs laid eggs and at some point evolved to chickens. Totally brainy me... Got to believe me... :-)

However, was the dinosaur that came first or the dinosaur egg? Can't be solved until another particularly boring day.

If you see an egg without a hen in sight...the egg is first. And vice versa.

Eggs, fish, amphibians, and reptiles laid eggs before birds, if you mean chicken eggs, then the egg since a bird was born from an egg with a good mutation I think

I think the egg came first. But there is the probibility that a single celled organism evolved into a hen. its very confusing. many theries are known but this is mine.

the hen is a female chicken so she has to be existing first to "birth" the eggs which then grow up to be chicken or hen and reproduce

Well, eggs were around long before any birds were, so I would say eggs.

I hate this question, I've had many shouted arguments over it. I used to insist it was the chicken but now I have to admit - it's the damn egg. Birds evolved from reptiles, and they were laying eggs first.
