It maybe because your baby is teething, or he/she may have a slight touch of Oral Thrush!
Make an appoitment with either your GP/Dentist and have them put your mind at rest!

There are many reasons why a one-year-old could get the appearance of a gum infection, although some of the causes are not infections. Mostly they are trivial and need no attention; however, there are some rare conditions that need to be dealt with. The safest course of action is to ask the dentist to have a look and advise you.
A word of caution would be to avoid trying to treat anything yourself - it would be very easy to do more harm than good. Sadly, many 'old wives remedies' are positively dangerous. Would you let your neighbour remove your appendix? Of course not, so don't trust them for advice with a young baby.

Mystic's suggestions are great. Frankly, to be safe, I would take him to the Dr (make sure it is an ear infection after all!) and get the antibiotic prescription just in case. That doesn't mean you have to give it to him. Get the script and then try treating it with the at home remedies. The less he receives antibiotics in his life the better, but if he really needs them you want them right away. Trust me, what seems like a minor ear infection can quickly spiral out of control! Just in the course of a few hours my daughter went from fine with an ear infection to having a 104 temp AFTER tylenol and ibuprofen, and unable to breath (she ended up with RSV). The RSV wasn't going away either until she took antibiotics to clear up the ear infection. So that way you have the script, you don't have to fill it if you don't want to, but if it gets serious (and it can get very serious especially under a year old) you have it if you need it. Also, I have found that herbal tea like chamomile (I like celestial seasonings Tension Tamer) helps me ward off illness when I feel it coming, and my daughter always drinks it when she's sick too. Its at least comforting if he's in pain. Good luck!

No, not usually a gum infection per say, possibly a canker sore or a developing tooth trying to pop through. Avoid things like Ambesol, that will only make the sore worse. See your DDS if you are concerned
