in a coma you are not dead nor are you sleeping. You are on pause and you are alive. I believe the brain still functions on a low level until it can figure out where the glitch is. I think on a sub conscious level thoughts occur as do dreams. I think hearing is present and the brain may be waiting on outside stimuli to trigger the response needed to restore full brain activity. If you believe in Heaven and the existence of hell then you must believe that the soul is still there (since death has not occured) and therefore the coma patient is still clinging to life on earth. Who knows what happens in the mind during a coma. We understand so little of how the mind works. Is the mind simply a mass of electrical impulses? If so then are we nothing more than organic computers? If so then we are subject to breakdowns just like a mechanical apparatus. To unlock the mind is to unlock the mystery and controversy of the existence of a soul

I was a nurse and know that people in comas have sleeping and wakeful cycles, hear what's going on sometimes and sometimes are just in a dark quiet place. The coma is not static. Some have said they sense the presence of departed loved ones...

I don't know, but my mother went into one, and eventually died. People, including my father, used to stand by her bedside and talk about her as if she weren't even there, or as if she were some kind of inanimate object. People called her a "vegetable" right in front of her. It bothered me, because I was afraid she could still hear us. When I asked an adult about it, I was slapped and told to "grow up", that my opinion was just that of a mere schoolboy. But I still wonder to this day how much perception she actually had. I get the feeling that it may have been more than we realized. Even if that weren't the case, I still didn't like the idea of people talking about her in those ways, especially in her presence.

My husband was in one almost 10 years ago for 33 days. He said it was strange, he said he was in between 3 different worlds, heaven, hell, and this world

A stress free life. I wouldn't mind being in a coma.

I picture it being similar to wasting an hour in here. Always feels like a year has gone by

There is no awareness in a coma.
If there is any apparent awareness of surroundings, the person is (by definition) not in a coma.
