That seems to be the consensus among Christians here... just wanting to make sure I've got it right.

Again, it was "OK" for Adam & Eve's children to commit incest in order to be fruitful and multiply, right?

beta fishy, don't get your knickers in a twist. I wasn't the one to suggest it. I'm basing this question ENTIRELY on the answers I've seen Christians provide about Adam & Eve's children.

stayathomem0m: "I'm soooo glad I have more than just virtual friends in my life"

You hadn't been answering anything for the past FIFTEEN HOURS and then the VERY FIRST question you answer when you get back is one of mine?

Uh huh...... and you say I've got a thing for YOU?

Right... right. Because that person is me. *chuckle* I must be MPD because that's certainly news to me. And I see that you were simply the victim of unlikely circumstances in the way that you jumped all over my question after 15 hours of nothing... and yet it couldn't POSSIBLY have been unlikely circumstances for me as well. Nah, so much more of a boost to your ego to imagine that I'd planned the whole thing.

Also, I find it strange that every time you lecture me about "getting a life", you simultaneously scamper off to prove that you have one too.

Do you wanna keep this up? I get the feeling that you know the other person isn't me but you're playing a game just to get on my nerves. Well, I'll admit, your vituperative vociferation is a bit annoying, so... you've succeeded! You're annoying! Goody for you.

So... are you out enjoying your life, or are you going to keep up this little tennis match we've got going? If you respond, we'll know.

If man evolved from a single microorganism, how did they have children? Did they all evolve individually? And how could they all evolve simultaneously? How did they get the idea to have sex and procreate? So many questions and so little time. Yes, Adam and Eve had 56 children altogether. They married each other and had more children. The Bible gave Adam and Eve the command to fill the earth. How else would they have done so? It is God who makes the rules. About 2500 years after Adam was created, Jehovah gave the command not to marry close relatives. Mankind had fallen too far from perfection to be allowed to marry their close family members and also the population had a good start by that time.

It wasn't like it is today. Back then ... well Eve was MADE of Adam ("So the Lord God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep; and while he was sleeping, He took one of the man's ribs and closed up the place with flesh. Then the Lord God made a woman from the riv he had taken out of the man, and be brought her to the man. Genesis 2:21-22). It was normal for them to marry close relatives and all, "I want you to swear by the Lord, the God of heaven and the God of earth that you will not get a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I am living, but will go to my country and my own relatives and get a wife for my son Isaac." Genesis 24:3-4
Rebekah whom this servant found was the "granddaughter of my master's brother" (Genesis 24:48) so Isaac married his niece. Though this seems very strange to us and would not be OK today, this back in those days insured a good blood line and hopefully a family who all believed in God. There are many incidents like this throw-out the Bible.

The story of Adam and Eve is an allegory.

Adam & Eve = Singular

Adam = Soul
Eve = Universal Mind Power
Cain = Higher Mind
Abel = Lower Mind

(The Garden of Eden is above the astral plane.)

...theres a difference between literal and literalist interpretation.

I'm soooo glad I have more than just virtual friends in my life *whew*

TRUE! But in all fairness I've never answered or asked a question about you just b/c you were logged on 3 TIMES IN A ROW like YOU did either....truth is I was looking for a good question and saw yours based on your history of 'ok' queries, but now I realize you just want your 'thumbs up' friends to stroke your ego. Your insecurity is apparent. Try making friends Zero 'outside the virtual box' and perhaps you wont be so bitter.
Blessings!!

There is some dispute about whether there were other people around with which Adam & Eve's children could breed.

Instead use Noah's family as your example, which the bible clearly states were the only people left alive after the flood.

This was a while after the fall, and so the 'no genetic defects before the fall of man' argument does not apply.

I'm not going to post a long answer here even though a proper answer requires one. Instead, I'd like to refer you to an article I published a couple years ago. The bottom line is that there was no incest involved. If you want to see how I can make that statement, please read it. I think you'll find it quite informative and enlightning.

I think we need to define "OK" here...

I think what you mean is more specifically "Was God OK with it?" If he wasn't, he might have put other people in their areas to help populate it; it's likely that not every action he performed, even in Genesis, was documented clearly, especially as the tale was summarized to his follower many many years after the fact.

Alternately, you might be asking the followers if -they- are OK with that idea. Of course, in that case, you have to weed out cultural bias, take into consideration genetic defection, etc etc. Very complicated issue there, and of course, based mainly on conjecture and faith - a volatile mix if ever there was one.

Do -you- think it was OK?

It was when they were the total human race. Within a few generations, the restrictions on such relationships were placed, and continued to become more restrictive through the scriptures as the human population grew.

In the first place, they have no other choice. In the second place, who are you going to report them to? In the third place, Cain had already left the nest and was out on his own when his parents kept cranking out children. Eventually, he meets a woman. It's his sister, but he doesn't care because he didn't grow up with her. She's practically a stranger.
