your great granny is most likely thinking of the passage in the bible where it states that it is a sin for a man to appear as a woman or to lay with another man to know him. HOWEVER, the times they are a changing. I have very long hair and I am ALL man so its a matter of opinion. I donot represent myself as anything other than a heterosexual being. I do not try to make people think I am a woman nor will I.
YOU are right in your argument that even Jesus had long hair. As far as I am aware Jesus wasnt a fag. So there are many different ways to look at the situation you find yourself in...the trick is , you must ultimatly follow your own heart and believe whats best for you. It doesnt really matter where your faith lies. Just that you HAVE faith.

Jesus was a Nazarene, Nazarenes had long hair, it was their custom. Long Hair today does not make someone a sinner. The practice of modern day churches has everyone believe that it is a sin. The bible says that once we are reborn, we are clean, a new person. Some men with long hair at this point may want to get a haircut and try to look new as well, but the soul is on the inside of a person. We cannot judge them for their looks.

It's not a "fact" that Jesus had long hair, but the very powerful Samson did.

Also, the time it was written and who it was written to plays a big part of the scripture she's referring to in 1 Corinthians. The girl prostitutes back then used to shave their head so people would be able to tell them apart which was "dishonorable." The Bible does not say it's a sin.

Also, in context, just before this scipture it talks about the head (not physical), so what makes people think it's talking about the physical "covering?"

There is a passage in one of Paul's letters where it talks about what is appropriate for a man and a woman, and it mentions that ideally women should have long hair, and men short hair.

However, this is mainly a cultural issue, and also links with the idea of maintaining gender identities (which was very important in 1st century Palestine).

Your Grandma is simply using this as a way of re-enforcing and justifying her prejudice for long hair. Unfortunately, because it is mentioned in the Bible you are unlikely to disuade her, even though she has taken it out of context.

1Cr 11:14 Doth not even nature itself teach you, that, if a man have long hair, it is a shame unto him?

1Cr 11:15 But if a woman have long hair, it is a glory to her: for [her] hair is given her for a covering.

During Christ's time, it was actually the "fashion" for men to have short hair, due to the domination of the Romans, who definitely wore short hair. No one really knows what Christ looked like; all of our current portraits of Him are based upon the paintings of Leonardo DaVinci, who gave Him long hair, although it may not have been accurate. Jesus may very well have had short hair like His peers, the other 12 disciples. If not, then it wouldn't have been difficult for Judas to point Him out in a crowd. Instead of kissing Him, he could have just said, "He's the guy with the long hair". The shroud of Turin seems to show a man with long hair, but I believe the Shroud to be a hoax, for a few reasons.

Sin is falling short of perfection. Why man dies is not known to us except for that hereditary sin of Adam's. It is his because if he had refused Eve, we still could have been born perfect, just as Jesus was with one imperfect human, Mary, and the Most Perfect Father, Jehovah God. Some defects only the manufacturer can fix. Our genetic research will not find such a genome.

It is a sin.. Look up in 1 Cor. 11 and read it for yourself.. It is also a sin for women to have short hair.. God wants a distinction between a man and a woman ..
Why this change, I don't know but I myself keep my hair short and my wife maintains long hair, not super long, but longer that any man does.. Some say that the Bible does not say it is a sin, but it says it is wrong so what do we consider it??

1Cor 11:14 Doth not even nature itself teach you, that, if a man have long hair, it is a shame unto him?
1Cor 11:15 But if a woman have long hair, it is a glory to her: for her hair is given her for a covering.

You know what bothers me about your question is the way you refer to your great grandma. You are very disrespectful to a very old person that God has put in your life. This is a serious character flaw that you should deal with in prayer..

i had this same agruement at my school onetime! (i used to go to a private school.) i dont think it says anywhere in the bible or the ten commandments that it is in fact a sin for a man to have long hair. but honestly, i think if you sat and read the entire bible just to find that little fact or something pertaining to it, you have too much time. but i dont think its a sin for men to have long hair, i think we should all just be happy with ourselves.
but please, dont put your great gma down for her opinions. just smile and nod and say "yup yer right" even if you dont think its right. its the only real way to make people stop bothering you on these sort of things..
hope that helped a little

She is probably from my parents generation, (greatest generation, ha.) This is the generation that just missed out on growing up with TV. But when they acquired TV as they were raising children, they first saw Elvis wiggling his hips and then they saw the Beatles on Ed Sullivan, with hair combed over their foreheads like girls, making teenage girls scream with crazy music. Then they saw hippies protesting the establishment. It was all a bit of a shock to them. They developed a lot of narrow perspectives. Their are a lot of bad things about TV, but it is broadening. In their time, all men kept their hair short. But what they refused to consider is that their time was a minority time.
