Nuff said. My mom always said this was the case, but why waste what's left of the ice cream?

I don't know about e-coli, but when ice cream melts bacteria can grow in it that won't grow at the lower temperatures and it can make you sick. You also should never thaw meat and then refreeze it. Listen to your mom. It's only a waste if you leave the ice cream out. Just put the carton back in the freezer after you scoop some out then there's no waste.

Yes..it can make you sick...
Why would you risk it? To me, it's not worth the chance of spending the next 5 days in the bathroom...for a cone of ice cream! Ice cream is a dairy product...dairy products harbor harmful bacteria if left at room temp. there is a reason MOST dairy products (AND meat products) say on the package "do not re-freeze if thawed"...
Listen to your Mom...she knows best (at least, in this case...lol!);

I really dont think so, we have ice cream all the time, and it does tend to get a little frostbittin, its all still good, it might make you sick but not that sick, it just depends on how fast you eat it, but there are some cases where if its refrozen it can taste gritty or have that sandy taste to it, at that point i owuld not eat it, thats just nasty then!!

I agree when you do that it doesn't taste good. But ice cream is a dairy product and when dairy is not kept in a refigerator (or frozen) then bacteria and all kinds of other stuff grows in it! So yes, it could make you sick.

Your more likely to get the E-coli from the door knob at the restaurant restroom than any thing from your refrigerator or freezer.
