We're pretty sure there was one, we seem to remember it sounding once (many many years ago)

Around the Noth Norfolk coast are a number of sirens that are used for flood warnings. They're tested a couple of times a year and are incredibly loud, sounding like an old WW2 air raid siren

Every town used to have a siren system, even though most people didn't know about them.
They were supposed to sound in the event of a nuclear attack!
They were decommissioned about 20 years ago, perhaps the Politicians realised if they went off there was little anyone could do anyway!

Mine does! Well... actually... I do! It's an old 'Federal Thunderbolt' air raid siren which, because I'm on the council, they let me use when anything serious happens. eg: Floods, nuclear bombs, bombs, in the event of war stuff, general alerts.
However, not much stuff like that happens around here, andif the nuclear bomb hit, I would probably be dead before I could sound the alarm.
The factory near me has one too, it's for informing the workers when shifts start and end. Scared the life out of me the first time I heard it. I thought it was World War 3!

some years ago there were sirens all over the UK to be used as the warning for the 4 min air raid of nuclear weapons strike
now days they are used for flood warning in those areas that are on the so called flood plains that might flood in the event of high tides and weather conditions
most are now around the coast they do test them every now and again so you may have heard one being tested

The government has more effective means now of warning the public of a crisis than they did during the second world war, through internet/telecoms/television and radio.
During a massive disruption of telecommunications, police stations are still "hardwired" to their respective HQ's and have their own generators, the HQ's still have hardlines to central government, usually underground cables as well as microwave transmitters.

Thetre was one until some years ago. It used to sound an all clear as a test. many of them were used a factory hooters
I have not heard one for many years perhaps because if we gor a four minute warning of a nuc. attack thetre would be bugger all we could do about it

YES we have one, I've seen it in the village for years and often wondered what it is used for, during a large lightening storm a few weeks ago it went off at 2am for about 15 minutes. surprise surprise no one got out of their beds. I'm just wondering if we were invaded at all in that 15 Min's.

Yes. We live in an area that has lots of chemical plants. In fact it was tested a couple of weeks ago. Mind you, that's the first time I've heard one in years.

No our town doesn;t and i'm not sure anywhere round my way (Hampshire) does. I have heard about them before though, i think places that are prone to problems (such as flooding etc) have them to alert villagers of a problem.

No. I think they realised it was a total waste of time, although I think they continued something similar in emergency stations, such as police fire and ambulance. for a while. No idea if it is still going on.
