Yes, you can copy the software files (Program Files folder) and transfer it to the external hard drive. But it is not a guaranteed success. Some softwares may work, but some may need actual installation on the drive which includes some 'registry key' thing.

Yes it can be done.
is your local disk on your laptop or desktop?
if laptop then get hold of an IDE to USB converter in which you can insert your external Hard Drive (If the External Drive is not with a USB Port) plug it in your Laptop's USB Port and transfer whatever you like!

If desktop then the same procedure as well!!
well for desktop you can also open your CPU and directly connect your external Hard Drive (If external Hard drive is not with an USB Port)
Note: USB- "Universal Serial Bus" hence as the name suggests its standard all over!

But if you are talkin bout transfering software which is installed on your local disk and you want that transfered then it can be done the same way i told you apart from the fact that it may not run on external drive cause if theres no OS, or even if there is, some softwares while installation actually put some files in Windows/Root directory too which is difficult to get!

It depends on the type of software. Some softwares are installable, some or only executable which doesn't require install.

Those which you have not actually installed, just move the corresponding folders or executable to hard drive.

Those which you have installed, uninstall them and install directly on external hard drive when it is connected.

Let me know if this helps!

Data yes, programs no.

Programs must be un-installed and re-installed to run on an external drive. Not a good choice.

Move all your data to the external drive.
