By short amount of time I'm thinking about 6 months....realistic or no?

Lift weights. Do strength training. Also, eat a diet high in protein and low in fat for best results. Also, try protein powder from sports stores.

The best way to get the results you want to is to do strenghth training machines.(the machines that you use weights) IN about a week you see results of muscle build up and you will feel stronger and healthier. Since you do not want to gain weight you should eat a little more, but only the healthy foods, that contain lots of proteins.

To gain muscle, work them. Free weights, machines, etc. but do not expect it to be quick.
