Get a Glock 20 for about $500 and spend the rest on reloading equipment. The 20 shoots the 10mm Auto round. It is twice as powerful as a .45 when you use the right loads, and it is plenty accurate. Glocks are the most dependable pistols in the world. That's why most police use them.
I have 3 Glocks, a 20, 23, and 29. I reload for them all. In the 20 and 29 I normally use 190 grain Sierra FPJ bullets, Remington 2 1/2 primers, and 12 grains of Accurate #7 powder if I use Federal brass, and 12.2 grains in Winchester or Remington brass. They shoot great. If you reload, make sure you use a taper crimp instead of a roll crimp, and be sure to use the right shell holder, especially when seating the primers.

A good 4" .357 magnum revolver from S&W, Taurus, or Ruger. The .357 is ideal for home protection, and can also be used as a back-packing gun as well. It will protect you from most predator animals in North America, and is the yard-stick by which all self defense handguns are measured. Just make sure you can handle the recoil.

If I had $700.00 to spend on a hand gun I would not spend it all on just the firearm I would also buy extra mags, ammo and spare parts so that I would not have to put out any more money for a wile. I would more then likely go with Hi-point firearm as they have a very good no BS warranty and the price would let me buy one in 9mm, .40, 45 and still have some left over for a few mags and some ammo. Or I would buy two Cz52s and five mags for each and spend the rest on ammo and parts.

Sig P220R. All metal, has night sights and a tac rail. Good, solid gun. If you go to a pawn shop, look for one with little or no wear on the slide rails. You can get one with only a couple mags down the tube for $200 less than a new one.

SIG Sauer P229 in .40SW
HK USP 40 or 9
Springfield XD 9 or 40
These are the best, best-selling pistols on the market.
I would not recommend .45acp unless you are an experienced shooter.
I do not recommend .357sig or .45gap as these are newer, less commonly available calibers that will have you paying a high premium for ammo with uncertain performance as a result. Stick with the common calibers, 9mm and .40sw.

I hunt, live in an area with almost no violent crime, and don't carry on a routine basis (though I do frequently keep one in the truck). For me, it's a no-brainer. For $700, I can get two good forty-something caliber revolvers.

Didn't you already ask this question. And didn't I answer Glock 17 with night sights???
Okay, let me see, $700 won't buy a Python so I'll say a nice factory nickel plated Beretta Model 86 Cheetah .380 acp. This is the one with the tip up barrel.
