You cannot work in a restaurant or with food for the consumption of other people if you have a contagious condition. Pink-eye, being highly contagious, is one thing you cannot work with if you work at a restaurant.
If you work for a bigger company, you need to talk to the district manager. You cannot be fired for following the health code in your state.
My husband and I have worked in the restaurant industry for most of our lives, and we have never, ever, ever allowed someone with pink eye to even come to work until the doctor clears them to come back.
Your manager sounds like a real gem of a human being. Take a note from your doctor into your boss and let your boss see your eye up close and personal. They can't write you up for this, tho - and you may have to fight with them on this one.

Call your doctor and have him mention in the note that your condition is contagious and could contaminate food. Go back tot he office if necessary. Explain the situation to him and I feel sure he'll help you out. Also, recognise that with new understanding of biology and new antiboticis, you won't be contagious for more then 24 hours - as long as you take your perscription. Though uncomfortable and unsightly - you will probably be safe to work.
I, as a consumer wouldn't buy food from someone with a gauze eyepatch or anything that might be described as Oozing. IN fact, I would be spurred to go to his competitor.
If your manager continues to insist after you get the note - please contact HIS supervisor. Follow the chain of command as high as necessary. I'm sure the CEO of MacDonald would probably take the call of a lowly drive thru person if they told his secretary - Hi, I work for your company and I have a contagious disease and my boss siad if I don't get my a** into work I'm fired - I just wanted you to know for when the media starts telling people who you get pinkeye at Macdonalds. Actually, I don't think that story would get past the regional office... Most large companies these days have an open door policy - go on-line to their website and I'm sure you can find the number. If it's a mom and pop - you can get the health department involved. That won't help you, but it will protect all the people in the world who love you, but fon't love your germs... :)

If you work around food that others will be eating it is against the law for you to be working while you have pink eye. Your manager could get in trouble with the board of health if you are found working. Stay home, he can't fire you or even write you up. You have a doctor's excuse.

I agree with all the posters advising you to get a doctor's note that says 1) contagious, and 2) recommend not returning to work for X days.
However, if your work attendance has been such that your manager believes that this is 'just another excuse' not to come to work, you may have to deal with that perception.
If you have used other excuses (especially at the last minute) to ditch work -- or he just THINKS you have, you really need that doctor's note to support you.
If you have had an attendance issue, even legitimate, the employer may decide that you are too difficult to schedule around, and terminate you anyway. They really (unless you have a disability you told them about when you interviewed) have no obligation to bend attendance policies for you.
Promise your manager that as soon as this condition clears up you will be back to work promptly, and that you will do your best to be consistent about working your schedule in the future.

Am I a Doc - Nope. All I recall is that it is BEST to not be near public places where you can spread the infection to others. IT IS possible that you could work however as long as you are religious about washing your hands and being nearly OCD about the situation. I recommend you follow the Doctors orders though – get the drops and stay away for a few days. If you are concerned about the situation and your job is in danger – contact your HR reps. as this is exactly what they are there for. Keep an ‘eye’ out too on your work load – if you do stay home from work and upon your return you are “singled out” and over loaded with work above and beyond your normal load – that is retaliation and HR absolutely needs to be involved with that.

DO NOT go to work! Tell your boss you have a note from the doctor. If he fires you, sue the company- there are lawyers lined up for lawsuits like this. By the way- I normally do NOT advocate suing people, but your boss is being a stupid. obstinate a/s/s/h/o/l/e who is putting his customers at risk for a highly contagious infection.

You have got to be kidding me! That is so irresponsible of your managers!! Is there a higher level of authority you could contact? I would stand up for myself and get a note from the doctor anyway, and maybe have someone from the doctor's office call your boss and tell him he's WRONG for that, and the 1000 reasons why!!! They probably want you to come to work anyway, so there lazy-asses don't have to do your work!! Let us know where this place is, so we never go there to eat!!!
Good luck!

Pink eye is very contagious. I work in the health field and have had co-workers with pink eye and they would not let them work. Get a DR. excuse If a DR. puts you off they can't make you come in. GOOD LUCK
P.S. DONT RUB YOUR EYE . WASH YOUR HANDS ALL THE TIME OR YOU WILL HAVE IT IN BOTH EYES
