obesity can be a genetic, mental, emotional, hormonal, or physical issue (Or combination of any of those) Its hard to point just one finger at one source. As for genetics, this is more rare, but it's out there. There are people, like me for instance, who are born with a larger frame. I will never be a size 2, ever, and I've accepted that but I keep physically active (walk three miles a day) and I eat healthy. For other people they may have a glandular problem that is inherited. As for the mental/emotional issues, there are good therapists out there who can help people to overcome childhood issues, etc. There are antidepressants out on the market as well. I think a lot of people eat out of bordom, to comfort themselves or to feel good in one way or another. It can become a habit or addiction like anything else. As for hormones, if there is an estrogen dominance that can make one gain weight. I'm still doing some research on this myself. It's interesting reading, that's for sure. Physically, a lot of people aren't getting up to walk. The body is made to walk, daily. Instead, people are doing online gamine, watching tv, or whatever, not moving around as much. There isn't anything wrong with gaming or tv, but within reason! Too much of a good thing can be harmful at times. There are *some* people who are just lazy but I think some of that has to do with some emotional/mental issues.

If you are ever in a starvation situation you will be one of the last people to die. Also, obese people have better temperature regulation. Think of the fat as like a large body of water. It takes a long time to heat up and cool down, so it stays about the same temperature. So fat people are alot more comfortable than skinny people in cold weather, and in short periods of time more comfortable than skinny people in warm weather. Also obese people are less likely to be malnourished, since many vitamins are stored in fat and most obese people got that way by eating alot. Hmm... and they have more cushioning, so if you hit them it won't hurt as bad. I know this is true, that fat acts as cushioning because I'm very skinny, and at one point got down to 90 lbs... let me tell you... even leaning back against a carseat hurt my butt and back. Also, I don't know about you but I don't want to ever get in a fight with an obese person; with all that fat to carry around their muscles get stronger underneath and they could really belt you one or even just crush you by sitting on you if they wanted.
So, lets see...
1) protectin from starvation
2) fat provides insulation
3) more nutrient storage
4) fat provides cushioning
5) advantage in fighting

perhaps looking Jolly. There are no benefits to being overweight. It can cause serious medical conditions including high blood pressure, diabeties, bone spurs in the feet, high cholesterol, depression, need I go on.
The is no reason to be ashamed or shy about being over weight. Just make healthy food choices and try and excercise daily. Good choices include limiting how much fried food you eat. Start by eating fried foods only once a week. Excercise can be just taking a 20 minute walk around the neighborhood. Just do it!

I can think only, that in females, especially those of afro american origin, obesity, in fact protects against ostheoporosis...
Nothing else beneficial a about obesity that come to my mind....The rest of the comsequences are quite negative ones...
Floating for those obese people that cant swim, can be an advantage----they are saved more easily....(than lean people that is).....

Yes you store more energy for your body. In a prolonged perios of scarce resources you would survive much longer than a skinny person.
This is actually one of the resons some people are obese - their ancestors began adapting to scarce resources by storing energy in the form of fat.

If you are obese you can qualify for the handicaped parking spots. Because the hips waddle so much the legs get weak.

Sad to say, not much healthwise. Unless you suddenly end up having to combat starvation, during which an obese person would have more energy reserves.

your bones don't break as easily with all that cushion. Actually, I read that if you're obese but still get plenty of exercise, its better than being really thin and getting little or no exercise.
