the universe has been there for ever?

or God has been there forever?

Neither.

God is only a superstition, so he's only been in people's imaginations for as long as people have been imagining him.

This universe started with the Big Bang. We really don't know what, if anything, lies outside of our universe.

My honest answer? I don't know. I've been trying to figure this one out for a long time. Neither science nor religion has come up with an answer that is truly satisfactory to me.

Is it possible that both have been there eternally, and that God and the Universe are just two names for different things, which is why 'God is everywhere' and 'we are all brothers in Christ' and similar statements were made?

Is it possible that the creator of our universe -wasn't- an all-powerful being, but just some passing organism who, as it were, stuck a finger in the primordial soup and caused the Big Bang?

Is it possible that, against -all- odds, this all came about by chance? Is it possible that, against all scientific evidence, it all came about in the blink of an eye by a creator deity? Is it possible that said deity started the whole thing deliberately and is watching his Plan unfold?

They're all possible, technically... but how can we ever know which is true?

We are not certain about the age of the Universe. With over 1 billion other Suns in all of the galaxies, our galaxy is like a grain of sand on an enormous beach. Our God Concept was originated by ancient people who had little understanding of the Worlds and Galaxies that are in existence. To this day with all of their different sects, there are over 1500 different religions and none have been able to prove that there is a man living in a cloud. The only proof that they have is that ancient people (who didn't know what was going on) said so.
