and drink fluids but never have choked on anything. It just feels like my throat is uncomfortable and tight. After 5-10 seconds, the food passes and I can eat again, but if I eat too quickly (i.e. the pace of other people, including everyone) then it happens regardless of how much I chew the food. Has this happened to anyone else? Or am I just suffered with a smaller than average asophagus (sp)?

It is not a haital hernia. I do eat slow (everyone around me always finishes before I do) and I do drink plenty and chew my food plenty.

This is called dysphagia [difficulty swallowing ]. If your esophagus was too small, they would have figured it out a long time ago.
Is it [ a ] painful to swallow, OR
[ b ] just painful to not swallow? [ stuck ]
If 'a' , there could be an injury or inflammation of the throat, causing the pain.
If 'b', the 'swallowing muscles' have spasmed, causing the pain and tightness.
1] drink a little before you eat, to lubricate the esophagus
2] take small bites [ one forkful - not heaping forkful ], and chew thoroughly.
3] slow down your pace. Swallow after chewing, one bite at a time, and you should be the last person done eating.
4] don't eat with guys - they eat too fast, which influences your
eating pattern.
Frequently, this is caused by stress, and if you treat that, with relaxation, more sleep, or exercise, it goes away. If it doesn't improve, see a doctor.
PS - I got this when my first baby was born and I got less than
4 hours of sleep a day, and when someone close to me has died.

Does this happen with bread, potatoes, pasta.. stuff like that? I have that problem. I just have to do the same thing.. drink fluids to push it down.

Also, you may want to look to see if you have anymore symptoms of a HAITAL HERNIA. http://www.cnn.com/HEALTH/library/DS/00099.html

I know my dad has it, and I have always seen him suffering to swallow.

WTF!

It sounds like you need to chew your food a little better! Eat slower, eating is not a race.
