this is the time to do something fun like that...im at an age where i won't get a job if i look too funky, and that stinks. if you can go to a professional, i'd choose that 9 times out of 10, for foolproof color...but remember to be clear with them, because they probably expect you to want a more subdued color. and after you go to a pro, maybe you will have a better feel for doing it on your own a while later.
a few little bits i know are that "cool" colors do not enhance many peoples appearances. try to go for something warm.
also (you probably know this) if you start with dark hair, you can pretty much only make it darker with dye - unless you bleach it first. but i wouldnt recommend more than 2 color treatments on your hair in one weekend, so if you bleach it, color over it once and let it be for a while (so your hair can get "calm" before you redo it.)
another issue is your current level of red. if you have a lot of red in your hair already, red is the hardest color to get rid of on your own -- so it's likely a lot of that redness will stay in there an enhance the effect youre going for.
manic panic has AWESOME coloring kits, as do a few other brands. if you want do-it-yourself, bold, allover red - go to Sally Beauty Supply and ask the salesperson her advice.
finally, a word of advice. if you star with highlights, FOIL. pulling your hair through a cap usually creates disasters....you'll end up all freaked out, and going to a hairstylist, and she will charge you extra to fix whatever "mistakes."
hope this helps :)

Clairol has a website and it has this thing called Try It On Studio. You can upload your actual photo and change the color of your actual hair so you know what it will look like! It's fun and they also make recommendations for you. Plus it's free and that's a huge bonus! I suggest trying that and then taking the colored picture to a stylist for the dying.

Good luck!

It all depends on your base skin color. If you have pink tones in your skin, go with a red or auburn base. If you have yellow tones, then go blond.
As for colors, less is more! Do something very subtle. It'll look better :D

ask your stylist for their opinion. They are trained in this area, and they will have samples for you to select from.
