We neglected the borders, so now we've got millions of people who can't be torn out without disrupting our economy, and we're in a war, so that would not be so great. The current bill tosses out anyone who doesn't work or has committed a crime since they got here and fines everyone else very heavily ($5,000 is huge money when you are working a job that doesn't require a high school diploma--that will be painful to pay off and is definitely a punishment for coming illegally). I am not kidding--what do conservatives want? Anything short of going house-to-house and deporting everyone (which WILL hurt the economy) is called "amnesty." I am really asking. What do they want?? What is the great threat in acknowledging we were stupid to leave borders unprotected and expect no one to come over when we're next to a poor country where people know they can die of treatable diseases? Are we willing to risk the balance of our economy in a war just to throw poor people back into even greater poverty?

1. I want the government to implement and/or enforce the laws regarding people who are here illegally. Whether they came across the border or they overstayed their visa is immaterial. I want people who are here to be here legally. I want people who are not here legally to be not be able to stay or work. Border enforcement must be the first step of any comprehensive immigration policy. Stop the influx.

2. Eliminate the legality of "anchor babies". Make the requirement be that the baby has to be born to an American citizen.

3. I recognize that the numbers who are here illegally is too many to "just send back" as so many others want. And I don't have any problem making them legal, to some extent. Those who cannot purchase a place in the permanent resident line should be given a temporary permit.

4. Got to track them all. All migrant workers, all those in on student visas, all those with temporary work permits, etc. With a nearly $3 trillion budget, I'm sure they can find the funding for this system.

5. Obviously, the quotas for immigration need to increase. After all, with some 10-12 million people here illegally, and the unemployment rate at less than 5%, the need was there. This means that the government failed to provide for this country's manpower needs, by having the quotas below what was needed.

6. Lastly, the need for everybody to recognize that foreigners do not have the right to be here illegally, to use services funded by US tax dollars, to have jobs here using fake identification.

By the way, you don't need to search for them. Just put a bounty on the finding of illegals and those who hire them - people will report them. But the problem is that local jurisdictions won't enforce the laws. Probably need to slip them some federal "grease", too.

Wow, I came upon this question and was really looking forward to some thoughtful responses since the media really doesn't ever seem to cover the conservative viewpoint imo. But there's total ignorance of the legislation here. Anyone who stole a social security number or committed any crime would get deported. Someone else said something about welfare -- it says in the bill, they have to be working to stay. Everyone agrees the criminals should be thrown out. But moral relativism is part of our legal system. You don't get punished the same for a murder as you do for jaywalking. Coming into the country illegally is wrong, but the punishment has to fit the crime. If people are here and working, they are not dangerous to anyone except Americans who haven't finished high school and can barely speak English themselves. Seems to me those Americans should sober up and get their GED rather than complain. And someone else was complaining about how they're going to be bringing their entire family in--and I thought conservatives were the ones who thought the family unit was the backbone of Western civilization. There were some posts here that did make sense and I am glad of that, but the rest of you--read the original post and know something about the legislation before you start spewing nonsense. Everyone agrees we should stop the influx from here on out, but there has to be some humane way to deal with the decent people who are here because Mexico is a miserable poverty pit and not because they are terrible, terrible people. Is humane possible? Can conservatives do humane?

First I think the Mexicans should make their own prosperity, that would help everyone. The only way they can have enough pride in Mexico to stay in Mexico, is to help build it into a solid economic power. That way the health care system improves along with the economy.
Second, migrant workers should be allowed to enter with papers. We currently have acres of rotten crops in the fields because the border is tightened down. And btw these are jobs the US folks dont want to do any longer. Watch for onion prices to go up this year!
Third, the problem wasnt created by conservatives or liberals, it was ignored by all.

As far as, what we conservatives want, is to stop giving anyone who crosses the border a free ride in the economy we built. I am not against migrant workers, but when we give away benefits to those who havent contributed to our economic system, it leaves less for those who have contributed. Simple math really.

Deportation through attrition. We don't need deport anyone. Simply remove the incentives for being here and they will deport themselves.

Honestly, you see no great threat in allowing millions upon millions of people to just walk across the border and colonize the American southwest? You think deportation would hurt the economy? Just wait until many more millions of poor non-Americans swamp this country.

O so it's OK 2 break federal laws steal our IDS & SS# pay no taxs in there real name. Scam our health ins, & car ins, Rape, murder,& steal. Seem 2 me you think our laws are not for them. As far as our economy goes if they left or are deported how much more gas would we have think if they used 1 gal each a day how my are here millions. Jobs would be plentyfull for the working class & there wages would go up not down . Housing would go up as there won't be 10 or more living in 1 house with 6 cars in the front yard. AS far as fruit pickers i would pay more for food just 2 have legal people here. They all don't stay in food pickers. There taking all jobs and the new criminal illegal aliens are taking jobs from the old C I A so pretty soon there won't be any old jobs left. There not going 2 pay any fines or obey any laws. Your taxs will go threw the roof paying for all there free bees. As far as deporting them YES what ever it takes, fine the employers, jail the criminals, with no jobs for illegals they will head south with the help of millions of American citizens. NO AMNESTY & CLOSE THE BORDERS. Just my thought. Just enforce the laws we have.

i assume which you're using the term "immigration reform" as a euphemism for amnesty? this is deceptive, yet i will answer you besides. John McCain performs the two aspects of the situation because of the fact this is an election twelve months. maximum individuals from his state are against amnesty, so he's hoping to fool sufficient of them to get for the period of the customary and the election. i'm uncertain that George W Bush ever claimed to be against amnesty, so I have no thought why you assert he performed the two aspects of the situation. Reagan i do no longer understand approximately, yet i do no longer keep in mind him ever taking significant action against illegals. i wish this solutions your question. do you understand what the fallacy of equivocation is? you're using the interest "conservative" to point many numerous issues, yet glossing over which meaning is meant at any given time. the reality which you affiliate the interest "conservative" with a guy like W, who tried amnesty, does not advise that maximum genuine conservatives are in prefer of amnesty, or perhaps pretend to be. Amnesty is inherently unconservative, because of the fact it may rigidity an intensive substitute on society. The observe conservative is derived from the muse verb "to shelter." So what does amnesty shelter? are you able to respond to that?

To start with, a heavier fine. Chinese illegal immigrants pay more than $30,000 to be smuggled here. $5,000 is not a significant fine for such a crime. I want actual severe punishment for the next wave of illegal immigrants. I want stronger border control. I do admit that mass deportation would be disruptive of our economy, but tolerance of illegal immigrants is disruptive of our legal system. Not saying this is our law and it must be obeyed, cause others to think our laws our subjective. I would like to see deportation paired with a wave of legal immigrants coming in to replace some o those kicked out. Fines for those knowingly hired illegal immigrants. For the legal immigrants , I would like to force them to learn English and make sure they understand that our culture comes first. I am not denying tolerance of other culture though. I know I won't get what I want and do believe a compromise is needed.

As for leaving our borders unguarded, it is, but they get beter at coming in. Besides, if you left your door unlocked at home, its still not an invitation for people to enter it.

The removal of millions would more than make up for the perceived damage to the economy. If you believe that a $5000 fine will be imposed, then you need to take your head out of the sand.
They broke the law enforce it don't change it.It's not that it cant be done just that no one wants to make the effort.
If it was millions of rapist who were hard workers contributing to our economy we would find a way.IT CAN BE DONE.Start over, enforce the laws on the books.
Even those laws are kinder than Mexico's

First of all, I'm guessing that everyone that wants the illegal immigrants to get out of the U.S. are Native Americans, all our families were immigrants. Immigrants have always came to this country looking for a better life. Think for a minute, why would they risk their lives and paying $5,000 - $45,000 to come to this country. Regardless if they are Hispanic or Asian. If they are illegals it is hard for them to get the benefits of this country. I am not saying there isn't anyone who doesn't have them. But there are a lot that are citizens and milk the system for all it's worth. The only way to fix the problem is make it easier to come into this country legally. But until we fix that, there will always be people trying to get into this country. Because everyone wants to have a better life for them and their family. Wouldn't you. And the problem is they can't do it in the country they live in. Because they don't have the freedom we do.

Most conservatives I know only want two things..Secure the border. Send all the illegals back so they can get in line.. Pretty simple. If there are riots or whatever..well....I believe in the 2nd amendment.
