I'd tell him to get it checked first of all. However I had a situation a couple of months ago where a lump appeared on my neck and according to the doctor it was linked to a cold or similar infection and it was swelling in the glands around my throat. But its always best to get things checked out.

There is no way to tell from your description what this could be. He needs to see a doctor and be examined.
You've seen the various answers above about how it could be a cyst, thyroid, or lymph node. Well, guess what it could absolutely be cancer.
My sons cancer was diagnosed through a swollen lympth node in the neck. The cancer didn't even originate in the neck area . . it was a metastasis from an abdominal sarcoma. A lump in the neck could mean many different things . . but only a doctor will be able to rule out metastatic cancer.
Your son needs to be checked as soon as possible.

Well, I'm not sure what to tell you except if it doesn't seem to go away after 1 week he should go see a doctor. sometimes when we have and infection in our ear or throat we can develop bumps because of the lymph nodes but if he smokes there's a chance it could be lymphoma or throat cancer or even tuburculosis. The reason I say t.b is because my mom had a lump the size of a plum on the side of her neck and the doctors thought it was cancer but the biobsy came out negative and they found out she had some type of tuberculosis and was treated for it and now she is fine. so dont worry just yet but make sure he does see a doctor.

Perhaps, perhaps not. Make an appointment with a doctor for an exam and a biopsy to determine the exact type of lump that it is.
Regardless of the outcome, your son should quit smoking. This may be the wake-up call that he needs! My wife had a lump in her neck that was her motivation to quit smoking. She had thyroid cancer and died after three years of treatments and surgeries. Tell him Randy said to quit and that Randy said that he won't regret that he did quit.

All lumps have a possiblity of being cancerous, but a lump doesn't automatically mean cancer. He should get it removed soon, though, there's lots of vital stuff in the neck that a lump could impede on.

I had a lump come up in my neck when I was a kid and it turned out to be an infected lymph node. But surgery was required to figure this out. I hope everything goes well.

A lump is probably a harmless cyst, though you don't give many details. No harm in getting it checked out at the docs though is it.

Probably just a cist which is nothing more than a build up of dirt under the skin and can be removed in 2 minutes , get it checked out though .
