Take care of as many of the arrangements as you can without her asking - calling family and friends, contacting the paper, ordering flowers, prepping for the funeral dinner, etc.

Understand that things she finds comforting one minute will drive her insane the next - be flexible and don't take it personally. Kind of follow her lead and understand she might just need to be alone sometimes.

Mostly just be there and show her you love her and understand. It's really hard because you're hurting, too. But she won't forget the fact that you're there and loved your aunt, too. You'll both get through this, but it's going to be awful for a while.

Last thing - sometimes it feels better if you're openly grieving in front of each other. It's okay to have a good cry together.

I'm so sorry about your aunt. Just be with your mother to comfort her, and it's okay for you to break down and cry in front of her.

sometimes silence is more powerful than words.

All you can do - because you are hurting too - is to be there and not say too much. If you're asked, be truthful, Mom, I know your loss - and I'm afraid if I talk too much I'll break down - and not be able to help you get through this. But know that I'm here and I understand how you feel.

That probably isn't enough - it's never enough - but that's all you have.

Be strong.
