I am an American. He is Australian. We want to meet in person before deciding on future plans. What type of visa is appropriate or where do we get started looking for information? He dosent want to HAVE to return to Australia, but he would have to if he came on visa waiver program. He dosen't want to wait months to get a visitor's visa. Is there a site we can read up on what our options might be?

Tourist visa is appropriate since you will just be getting to know each other. If your meeting resulted to good terms and have a relationship, you can now apply let him apply for a fiancee visa in order that you could get married.

Unless you get married he's going back. There are no quick options.

He could get an educational visa but that would require him to attend school and be very expensive. He could attempt to get a work visa but those are reserved for highly skilled and educated professionals and could take years.
