I just left it until it does hurt?

It hurts when you get food in it. That means that the nerve is already exposed. You are leaving it open for food and bacteria to get in and that will cause even more decay and then infection and the tooth around it is not fully supported and you could break more away. At this point, it is likely that all it needs is a filling... but if you let the cavity go too deep, you will either have to get it out or a root canal - and a crown to prevent the tooth from continuing to break away. It is best to save up the couple hundred to get it fixed NOW before it causes you any problems and costs you a lot more in the long run.

Your tooth will eventually break if you leave it alone for too long. It happened to many of my teeth because I was too poor to go to the dentist and I didn't have insurance. My fillings fell out and, eventually, chucks of my teeth around where the fillings were began to break off. Then I was in more pain because nerves became exposed. I ended up having to have a bunch of teeth pulled. The teeth that can be saved need root canals now. You can wait a little while but I waited YEARS before I dealt with it. The longer you wait the worse it will get and it will be more expensive to fix.

yes, it will cause a problem. Your tooth will continue to decay and once it starts hurting, you'll regret not getting it taken care of before it got to that point. i have a root canal scheduled for sat, and im in agony right now because i didnt get it taken care of when i should've.
Going to the dentist is scary, but it's worth it overall.
