Hi!

I am a vet tech at feline only practice. Your cat needs to get to the vet. Most likely, she may need a dental cleaning and probably a round or two of antibiotics. Your doctor may give antibiotics before and after.

There are less common but more serious diseases that causes ulceration in the mouth that your vet will be able to rule out upon physical examination. S/he will also be looking to rule out a tumor under the tongue called "squamous cell carcinoma" which can be treatable if caught early enough.

At 14, she should probably have pre-anesthia blood work done. Blood work would also be a good idea because several systemic diseases will cause oral problems in cats. These include diabetes and kidney disease.

Hope she is feeling better soon.

When cats have painful mouths or teeth, a good sign is if they rush up to their food, only take one or two bites, then leave it, that means eating is painful, look for that sign, if she is doing that, take her to the vet, they may not want to remove teeth at her age, as anesthesia on elderly cats is not advisable, but they could clean them up a bit for her under light sedation.
There is another possibility, cats can suffer from dementia and do some very odd things, like miaowing for long periods for no apparent reason, walking into things, or sucking on things, but I should get her teeth looked at before worrying too much!

You're obviously very worried - why haven't you made a vet appointment yet?

It does sound very much like your cat has dental problems. Just because she hasn't got many teeth left does not stop the remaining ones from becoming a problem, particularly if you're not taking steps to keep them clean.

Your cat is in pain, as you say, so you MUST take her to a vet.

as you cat has very little teeth she maybe having problems chewing her food small enough to swallow and is using her paws to put food particals out from her teeth
it was an accident when she caught her claw in her mouth but she is an old lady now so
just to be safe take her to your local vet
if there is anything wrong the vet will find it and give you advise that will better

I really don't know what is wrong with your cat but here are some suggestions: First off, take her claw out of her mouth if you can. Second off, I would take her to the vet. Hope your kitty feels better!

She could have gingivitis. My cat had it and had to have most of his teeth out (he nearly died) . It is very painful, which could be why she is putting her paw in her mouth. Luckily, it's not preventing her from eating but you need to get her checked out by a vet ASAP. If she also got her claw stuck in her mouth, you need to be really careful that it doesn't get infected. Please see a vet as soon as you can as she could be in a lot of pain! Good luck!

It is probably something to do with her teeth, even though she hasn't got many left, it may be a gum problem.

A vet will put your mind at rest I'm sure. It sounds like you are afraid to take her in case you are given bad news. That may not be the case at all and they may be able to sort there and then.

The worrying will drive you nuts (and her) if you don't take her.

Good Luck,.

It sound's like your cat could have bad teeth, (of whats left of them.) or an infected gum. If her breath smell's you should take her to the vet's for a check up.

Please get her to a vet ASAP. Whenever an animal acts out of its normal behavior, it is a signal that something is wrong. Since she cannot communicate through words, this is her only way of let you know. A vet can help her more than we can. Good luck and I hope she feels better.

Straight to the vets, honest it think she may have something in her throat and at that age to get her that far to lose her would be devastating. Good luck I hope she is o.k.
