It typically means giving in to the demands of an aggressor in order to avoid war. Though not limited to the time period, when a policy of appeasement is discussed it usually refers to the dealings between Neville Chamberlain of Britain and Hitler, and therefore has a negative connotation.

Interesting quote from Winston Churchill - "A appeaser is one who feeds a crocodile hoping it will eat him last."

i think appeasement by definition is giving in to a demand made of you THAT YOU KNOW IS WRONG in order to avoid war or other consequences with that nation.

the britain appeasement of hitler prior to WWII is everyone's favorite example of this - but they were not alone in that decision and this is by no means the only example of this.

i think america's behavior towards saudi arabia after 9/11 amounts to appeasement.

we know that almost all of the hijackers on 9/11 were from saudi arabia and that bin laden is as well.
we know that there are saudi billionaires who TO THIS DAY openly support terrorism and not one has ever been even questioned.

there are still rabid anti-american clerics in saudi arabia who routinely lead their congregations in chants of 'death to america.'

america stands idly by and allows all of these examples of the saudi hatred of america and americans to pass because some guy in some palace has a 'relationship' with some guy in the white house and they have lots of oil.

we have appeased the saudis and bin laden particularly and that means that RIGHT NOW he is free to plan the next attack on america...
