As corny as this sounds, I think you should get the word "LIVE" or "LIFE" somewhere on you. You've battled through a lot in your life, but you lived and you're still living, which is a beautiful thing. You've made it through tough obstacles and now look at you: you have a wonderful girlfriend and you've turned out to be what sounds like a great person. And what you did was you lived. Haha, so thats just my opinion. But in general, get something that really shows who you are and describes you. Whatever makes you happy is what you should get. (: Hope this helped! And good luck with your new tatoo!

If you're hestitant at all, I suggest you wait. Tattoo shops are not going anywhere, so no need to worry about not being able to get one later on.
If you're getting a tattoo just because "Everyone else is", or if you're worried about "Not liking it later on", then don't get one. This is a big decision that will be on you forever, so its' good to make sure you want this on you til the day you die.
I suggest you do what I do when I'm thinking about my next piece; research it, find out what it means, look at as many pictures of other ones you can find, and think about what this tattoo really means to you. When you get things that don't mean anything and are just on impulse, you'll most likely regret it later on.
When you do finally decide to go ahead and get whatever you're going to get, find a tattoo shop with a good reputation. Ask for their portfolios, and ask around to others what their opinon of the shop is. When it comes down to the actual time you get it, the artist should be more than willing to go over everything with you and work with you on how you want your peice to look like/where/ect.
Hope this helps.

My suggestion is to decide for yourself what you want. Look at tattoo magazines, online pictures, and flash in the store. Don't COPY someone elses because the whole point of tattoos is to be artwork and original. Secondly... think about the tattoo you want for AT LEAST a few months, if not longer. The reason I say this is because, for example, say you like hello kitty (like you said), but in 2 months, you don't anymore. You would really regret that.

If you are going to actually get a tattoo (which i would not suggest...but what do i know) I would make sure you are doing it for the right reasons.
Historically tattoos have served as rites of passage, marks of status and rank, symbols of religious and spiritual devotion, decorations for bravery, sexual lures and marks of fertility, pledges of love, punishment, amulets and talismans, protection, and as the marks of outcasts, slaves and convicts.
Do not just walk in and get a symbol because you will be marked for life. Make it personal, not public. Would you rather be known as the girl with the Hello Kitty tattoo or the girl who has a personal connection or history with her body art.

If you don't know what to get don't get one yet. It is going to be on you for the rest of your life. Try and pick something that represents you, or something you have gone through in life. At least for your first tattoo. Then start thinking about your second because believe me you will want another after the first.

I would just be sure whatever you decide..it's something you really want and won't be ashamed of or embarassed to have in years to come. I would suggest having a tattoo of something that has some type of meaning to you. Usually tattoos that have some kind of meaning to the person is less likely to be regretted at a later time.

Forgive me but I'm throwing up. Tattoos that are cute and as goal no less. Honey, you're missing the point.
It should be something that means something to you and it shouldn't be small. My only hope is that we won't meet as I have been known to humiliate those of the cute order.
Oh yeah, its tattoo, not tatoo. Good luck with that.

Youre exactly right, the tattoo will be there forever, and hello kitty is very immature. You should really think this out, do you really want it or not? Additionally, you should know what you want, suggestions from others mean you just want a tattoo.....
