i want to learn how to play an instrument that isnt completely common. i already know how to play guitar at an intermediate level and just wanted to know what would be a good brand and kind (acoustic or electric) of mandolin to get. i would perfer one that has some kind of interesting shape rather than just a plain circle (kinda curvy like a guitar).

PS. is a mandolin what is always plaing in the background of italian music? (like in the godfather)

Check out Elderly music (www.elderly.com) they have a big selection. Kentucky makes good lower end mandos - 150S and 250S are great buys. MusiciansFriend has the Michael Kelly Acoustic-Electric for $699. - It's really nice both acoustic and plugged in. The "interesting shape" you're referring to is called an "F" style.

In answer to your PS yes. I have 2 electro-acoustic mandolins. One by Crafter, which is guitar shaped with a cutaway and one by Stagg, which has f holes a bit like a fiddle, but is teardrop shaped. I use both in my Barn Dance band & in pub sessions.Hope this helps
