I don't think you are going to get the answer to your problem on here. You are being very responsible, by taking your dog to the vets. The only suggestion I could make, would maybe be to get a second opinion. If you are in the UK there is a programme on BBC tonight about the super vets. They have all the leading vets, and deal with lots of things the normal vet cannot find answers for. Good luck

Perhaps take him to another vet for a second opinion?

If the ear is red and it is hurting him, there is obviously SOMETHING wrong. Perhaps he has ear mites or maybe even a sore inside that is itching and when he scratches it, it hurts. An infected hair could even be the cause. I would cleanse it daily with a cotton ball and sweet oil or peroxide. Then I would consult a different vet.

seriously get a new vet, if the poor soul cant even let you clean his ears as they are so painful, you need a new vet.
My dog had really bright red ears which were sore, and there was black gunk inside. I made a wash with tea tree oil and warm water, and soaked a clean rag in it, then just pressed it inside her ear for a moment (even tho she didn't agree with it!) and wiped the ear slowly as i removed it. Thats all she could take as she was in pain too. I didn't think it would work at all but in 5 days it had cleared up so much!....Did so much more than my vet did!

There is a product available called "Thornit". It comes in powder form and it will clear up ear mites overnight. I use it on all my dogs periodically. Just a pinch in each ear is all it takes. Use it for a couple of days initially. To purchase it go to www.caninechemist.co.uk, or you can read all about it if you just tap "Thornit" into your search engine.

Worth a try. You may also like to check that his nails are not too long.

Hope this helps you.

It sounds like canker to me ,your dogs ears smell if it is that ! If he has had it for a long time it could be chronic, it is caused by ear mites and can be eradicated with the right medication . Go and take your dog to a different vet for a second opinion ! Good luck !

Oh hun, poor dog.....
My dog is always having bother with his ears but the vet can always tell me what is wrong and usually it is an ear infection or ear mites....

Usually it is an allergy or infection to cause redness and soreness, can i suggest you may seek another vet for a second opinion...

Other common problems can be...
A foreign object in his ear
Inner ear infection
Ear mites
Broken blood vessels in ear flap.

I really hope your poor wee dog is feeling better soon....

My last Newfoundland suffered a similar condition which we controlled with a product called EPIOTIC (buy from your vets over the counter - not expensive) You can drip it into the ears as well as wipe it over the surface. Funny enough, warm salted water helped him too (sounds too simple but it was effective). And definitely change your vet.
I must add though that you have to eventually weigh his suffering against your wanting to keep him alive. Don't let him suffer if there is no solution.

Awww! I think you just provoked my daily cry. Your vet may not be as genuine as you think he is. I don't know what to say TO do but DON'T buy 'miricle' tablets over the internet. They are made by conmen by putting a mix of vitamin tablets and paracetamol in a brown bottle. I really hope your dog gets better. Good Luck x

Change your vet and ask your new vet to refer your dog to the nearest veterinary hospital. Hopefully they will find out what's wrong. If you can't find out what the cause is, and your dog is still in a lot of pain, it might be kindest to have him put down. I hope it doesn't come to that and wish you both well.

What kind of a dog is it? I have a beagle and he has the same problem but it is because his ears are so big and floppy that air can't get in there to dry the wax, he has a lot of wax in his ears and we have to clean them regularly and squirt an alcohol based cleaning solution in his ears if we don't he has the same problems as your dog. I hope you figure out what's wrong.
