1. DON'T PANIC

2. Take your foot off the accelerator pedal, the car will automatically decelerate (reduce speed), albeit slowly.

3. Switch on the hazard lights of your vehicle.

4. Allow the speed to come down to the range of the lower gear (i.e.) say, if you are at 60 kmph and driving in 5th gear, allow the speed to come down to somewhere around 40 or 35, and then shift down. Do this process till you reach the 2nd gear. Then the engine acts effectively as a brake, and the car will come to a stand still, and you are safe! All the while, your foot should never go to the accelerator pedal!

5. In case of automatics, down shift gears one by one from drive (D) which is the top, to the lowest forward gear (1st).

6. In case of manuals, you may use the hand brake, by keeping the release button pressed, to slow down the vehicle - don't pull it straight away, as (i) the vehicle will skid for sure (ii) the cable which operates the hand brakes may break! This will help during brake failures while going down-hill and in heavy traffic.

If your brakes are maintained they will not fail. If they do fail it depends on your situation. If possible take foot off gas and coast to a safe stop. Don't panic. If a major problem you can steer into a chainlink fence. That is a soft landing by comparison. Or some bushes.

I would down shift (I have a manual)

With an auto all you can do is use the E-Brake (Parking brake) and pray really. If you're doing any sort of speed expect the back end to start to come out and be ready to steer into it.

Would there be anyway you could find 2nd gear and slow down that way??

First of all, you downshift. If you're going fast, then after downshifting, when your car starts to slow down, go and crash it into tree or something. But as a precaution, wear seatbelt as you won't go and smash into the steering. And also, go to speeds upto 40 to60 kph. The most important thing of all is you have a check on the brakes and maintain them.

Downshift to a lower gear, even in an automatic, pull over to the shoulder of the road, and throw it in neutral and roll to a stop.

Call a tow truck.

Throw it into park... theres a good chance youll ruin your transmission but youll be safe... pulling the ebrake will lock up the rear tires and may make the car spin out at higher speeds.

Use hand brake, turn the car off. This will just damage the gear box.

down shift untill you are at a fairly lower speed, then turn off the engine while gears are engaged and call the towing when you stop
don't turn off the engine if you are not going straight line, you may lock up the power steering or the steering wheel

If you have an automatic, DO NOT shift into park. That'll just lead to needless transmission carnage. You can drop it down into first gear. It doesn't provide quite as much engine braking as in a manual trans, but it will slow you down really well.
