Basically it is a software standard that allows software (such as games) that uses 3D graphics to interface with graphics hardware easily. It pretty much allows software developers to only program for one common hardware interface instead of doing one for each individual 3D chip released.

It used to be very popular in the late 90s but most hardware manufacturers and software developers prefer to support Direct X, another interface standard, nowdays.

if im thinking of the right thing it is a programming language good for gaming that is similar to basic.
