Am I missing something? Why would putting missile defense systems in Europe threaten Russian security? It just sounds like, if my neighbor buys a bulletproof vest, I go out and buy a gun??

You got it. What I see is Vladimir is on a propaganda campaign to take the Russian people back behind the iron curtain and the best way to do that is to make them fear the west. he is using the US as an excuse, but why is he not saying anything to the countries that are having these defense shields installed? It's not like we can just waltz into a country and install equipment without their say so.

First, those protective missiles can very actual be made offensive - this is in basic terms the situation of filling they convey. and can they grow to be offensive, US could have an threat to break a large area of Russian territory with minimum reaction, Russia in basic terms won't have time for perfect counter-attack. 2nd, if this shelter would be shelter certainly, it could make Russia almost thoroughly defenseless against US' missile attack. you understand, if US/Russia will hearth some missiles now, Russia/US will counter-attack purely some seconds later, so the two international places would be wiped from the face of Earth. yet this shelter could have the potential to shrink the quantity of Russian missiles very much, and united statesa. will go through lots lesser harm than Russia, so back those protective missiles will supply US an threat to break a large area of Russian territory with minimum reaction. This missile shelter makes Russia an consumer-friendly prey for US, and there are actually not any guaranties that US won't attack. So for sure Russia does not like it.

Because the US is trying to upset the nuclear balance. At present the US cant attack Russia because an atttack would bring total destruction of the US by Russia in retaliation. An attack by Russia on the US would also lead to the destruction of Russia by the US. The situation of MAD (mutually assured destruction) is believed to have stopped the US and Russia from ever going to war with each other and has prevented WW3. The new US system in Eastern Europe will upset that balance by making the US safe while Russia remains vulnerable. Therefore Russia needs to upgrade their missile system to maintain the nuclear status quo and deter any US President from ever considering an attack on Russia as it will lead to the US being destroyed. If Russia was to place upgraded missile defence systems in Latin America the same situation would occur in vice versa with the US upgrading their missile sytems to deter any Russian from even considering an attack on the US

The Russian Military are nervous about a US missle system being deployed right near their borders in Poland and Czech Republic.

Its a hang-over from the cold war era.

I think Russia feels the US defense degrades Russia's ofensive capacitiy, so they try to put pressure where they think it would be sensitive. Besides, they try to create tension between Europe and USA

Dude, I'm not even going to get into the complexities of this issue and the way you've managed to simplify it down to a neighbor wearing a bullet prrof vest. Knock yourself out.
