I have often seen and heard claims that according to Islam, the Bible has been grossly distorted over the centuries. Can somebody give me a reference in the Koran that claims that?

Thank you Calmness, that is helpful.
It seems, if I understand correctly from what you have written, that the Koran's direct claim is mainly that people have distorted the Bible in their interpretation of it, and the belief that the actual writing of it was distorted comes from the differences between the Bible version of an incident and the Koran's version.

3:78. There is among them a section who distort the Book with their tongues: (As they read) you would think it is a part of the Book, but it is no part of the Book; and they say, "That is from Allah," but it is not from Allah. It is they who tell a lie against Allah, and (well) they know it!

4:46. Of the Jews there are those who displace words from their (right) places, and say: "We hear and we disobey"; and "Hear what is not Heard"; and "Ra'ina"; with a twist of their tongues and a slander to Faith. If only they had said: "We hear and we obey"; and "Do hear"; and "Do look at us"; it would have been better for them, and more proper; but God hath cursed them for their Unbelief; and but few of them will believe.

5:13. But because of their breach of their covenant, We cursed them, and made their hearts grow hard; they change the words from their (right) places and forget a good part of the message that was sent them, nor wilt thou cease to find them — barring a few — ever bent on (new) deceits: but forgive them, and overlook (their misdeeds): for God loveth those who are kind. >----this verse refers to the Jews

2:75. Can ye (o ye men of Faith) entertain the hope that they will believe in you? — Seeing that a party of them heard the Word of God, and perverted it knowingly after they understood it.

2:58-59, 7:161-2. And remember it was said to them: "Dwell in this town and eat therein as ye wish, but say the word of humility and enter the gate in a posture of humility: We shall forgive you your faults; We shall increase (the portion of) those who do good." But the transgressors among them changed the word from that which had been given them so we sent on them a plague from heaven. For that they repeatedly transgressed.

In order to understand what is meant by 'distortion' the following criteria is used in Islam. You may be interested in seing this.

1. To deliberately interpret something in a manner that is totally opposite to the intention of the author.

2. To distort the pronunciation of a word to such an extent that the word changes completely. For example, the word ‘مروه’ was changed to ‘موره’ or ‘موريا’.

3.To add to or delete a sentence or discourse in a manner that completely distorts the original meaning. For example, the Jews altered the incident of the migration of the Prophet Abraham (sws) in a manner that no one could prove that Abraham (sws) had any relationship with the Ka‘bah.

4.To translate a word that has two meanings in the meaning that is totally against the context. For example the Hebrew word ‘ابن’ was translated as ‘son’ whereas it also meant ‘servant’ and ‘slave’.

5.To raise questions about something that is absolutely clear in order to create uncertainty about it, or to change it completely.

The Quran does not mention explicitly which parts are distorted in either the Torah or the Bible

The Quran however with a difference from Christianity, says that God gave Jesus Christ a message, this message was in the form of scripture and Jesus Christ had this written down back when he was around. Thus contrary to what Christians claim that the authors were divinely inspired by God, Islam recognizes the Bible as the book God gave to Jesus and asked him to pass it on to the generations to come.

Isn't it funny that all false prophets claim that God's Word has been distorted? Jehovah Witnesses rewrote the Bible recently because they said the same thing. The truth is when you don't want something in the Bible that convicts you, then just dream up your own Bible as did Muhammad and the JW's. And the Book of Mormon, etc.

I always ask muslims which parts of the bible have been distorted (i.e. for a list). They've never once been able to produce one. Yet, they quote various verses they think can be twisted to back up islam. From what I can tell, they believe all the parts of the Bible they don't like were distorted.
