I would like my dining area to serve as a multifunction area, almost like a den. How can I achieve this look? What type of dining table should I buy to be used in other ways? I really don't want the table to be only used for eating or be the focal point of the area.

If you had a round table it would double as an excellent game table, board games, scrabble, poker. Also they have dining tables which can either be raised or lowed so it is used for dining or as a cocktail/coffee table.

Purchase a square or rectangular table that can be pushed up against a wall. One with a drop leaf or removable leaf would allow you greater versatility just in case you have many people over for a meal. After that, you might consider a computer armoire, so that you use the room as work space when you're not eating, but then close the doors on the computer when you're not using it. Bookcases would also be a really great addition - give it a library feel with books & CDs or display decorative items.

A table like this from Pottery Barn would work well for what you are looking to do:

When both the sides are down or even just one side, you could use it as a desk or buffet.
