In my last question I asked about trainer intent. Which leads me to ask, by reading the charts and past performances, is there a way to spot when a trainer is taking his horse for a tightener, or a lesson in a race?

honestly, there is no way of knowing short of spying on the trainer to know when a horse is going to 'work race'...ive heard it from owners and others 'not to bet so-and-so's horse today'...and Ive learned when they tell you that...that you should listen...

yes, it's called handicap racing, take buzzards bay, he ran on may 5Th Kentucky derby day, in race 10 at Hollywood park....he was carrying 120lbs with jockey Jose valdivia, he was spotting The rest of the field between 2 and 10 pounds. he ran up the track...that race was a grade 2 event, he came back this weekend in a grade 1 event worth $300.000 drop down to 116lbs and won. if he would have won on may 5th he would have been carrying 122lbs, now that's a plus 2lbs vs minus 4 lbs, so the stable gave him a prep, and got the money baby.....good luck and good racing.

the pp shows that when a horse drops in distance from a route race, that horse has a good chance of winning if the route race showed good speed for most of the race, and prior pp show that the horse ran well against other horses at the same distance as the current race. lol :)

Most of the time if a stakes horse is coming off a long layoff and running between 6 - 8 furlongs, when he/she most of the time is running 1 & 1/16 or longer they are prepping
