A green card allows you to live/work in the US; getting into Canada will require a passport... or, more importantly, getting back into the US when your trip is over will require a passport.

The green card is the one that is basically an extended work visa for the US. To obtain one, you must, by definition, be a citizen of a country other than the US.
Anyone not a citizen of either the US or Canada seeking to travel to Canada by air, land, or sea MUST have a valid passport. This is the ONLY acceptable proof of citizenship. You must ALSO carry your green card with you, or you may not be allowed re-entry to the US (and have your work visa status reinstated).
As a point of international law - anyone in a country that is not the one in which they are a citizen must carry proof of citizenship at all times. Effectively, this means you should always have your passport and green card with you while in ANY country, including the US and Canada.

If you are flying from the US, their rules are you cannot board an international flight without a passport.
I just flew home to Canada from Vegas. Someone made it all the way to the gate, but was refused boarding because they didn't have a passport. They didn't make it anywhere near Canada Customs.

You will need a passport to leave the USA by air, and to return to the USA by air. If you travel by car, you don't need a passport.
Having a green card means you won't have to get a visa.
