My personal opinion is don't go on medications.
I don't know how severe your depression is but I think that everyone is being over medicated these days. It's natural to be depressed sometimes and have some ups and downs but the doctors automatically prescribe you medication as if your abnormal.
Again I'm not sure how severe your depression is but I would recommend trying other things before you let them put you on drugs. I was prescribed Paxil and refused to take it and a few months later I was fine.
I just started doing things to fill a void I felt in my life. I now volunteer for the big brothers big sisters program and it's done wonders for my life.
Just my opinion but evaluate your life and see what isn't making you happy or why you used to be happy and what has changed since then. Try to do things for you; do something your good at or volunteer for a program your passionate about. It might sound lame but it really can work.
Good luck!!

From the way you phrased the question, I'm assuming you're depressed about a person, maybe a relationship. If I'm right, things like this take time to get over. If you just want a break from thinking about all of this stuff for a while, television and movies are both pretty good mind-numbing distractions, lol. Try to hang out with your friends, go for a walk, read a book, whatever works for you. Like the other person said, I don't think you would need medication to overcome this.

If the depression is situational, in other words, there has been an event of some sort that led to the depression, just talking to someone about the event will go a long way in alleviating your depression. If however, there is no apparent reason for your feeling depressed, it could be a neuro chemical imbalance in which case, medications and counselling will be required to control it.

Depression is an illness, just like having diabetes or some other chronic disease. Frequently depression is caused by chemical imbalance in the brain or body. You need to see a doctor for a proper diagnosis and treatment. Your family doctor would be great for this!

Go see a doctor, they can help you. Or a therapist, you talk and they listen for an hour. You tell them your problems and they will do what they can to help, whether it be admit you in the mental health area, or give you antidepressants, etc. If you don't think it's that bad, do something fun! Whatever you like to do, go see a movie, talk with friends. etc.

When everything fails, try God Almighty who created you and me and everybody. God loves you, and you are precious to Him. Jesus died on the Cross to save us from condemnation, and qualifying us to Heaven. Just come to Him with genuine repentance and faith, and you will have a life of peace, joy, and meaning. Life on earth is short and uncertain; Heaven is forever without end. Never, never, miss Heaven for anything in this troubled world. Best wishes!

Go to the doctor, or just spend some time thinking about what is depressing you and work through it. Come up with a solution and get past it.
