9mm would be your best choice. Lower cost means more practice / fun at the range. Those people that say the 9mm is not an effective stopping round can't substantiate their claim at all. Unless your target is a person high on pcp, a well placed shot will stop them cold. The 40cal also wears on the gun more then a 9mm. The firearm will have an overall shorter life due to higher pressures. The 9mm is the way to go.

The .9mm is just a little more user friendly for the novice shooter in as it not having as much recoil as the .40 S&W. Also, the ammo is cheaper so you can put in more practice. So I'll have to say that all things being equal, the .9mm will serve you better.
TO THE POSTER WHO ADMONISHED NOT TO KILL POOR ANIMALS: Neither the .9mm nor the .40 S&W are hunting calibers. They are defensive calibers.

Personally I prefer a .40 caliber to a 9mm anytime. The 40. caliber is a little slower bullet, but has better stopping power than a 9mm.

I'm supposing you're looking at the M&P. I've shot it, and was amazed at how little felt recoil you experience. Pretty decent little gun. Since the gun is designed to eliminate recoil so well, the .40 will be easy and comfortable for anyone to shoot. The .40 will create a larger wound and have more impact at the target than the 9 would. If you're gonna hit someone with a hammer, use a big hammer!
And I hope you shoot the cutest, tastiest, fuzzy-wuzziest bunny you can find with it.

The 9mm has cheaper ammo but the .40 S&W has more stopping power. Personally I like the 9mm better. It packs enough umpf.

9mm is cheaper starting out. But both rounds are easy to find even at walmart. 40 is snapier in recoil then 9mm. 40 is a good stopping round though but a 9mm is better then no pistol. My girlfriend shoots 9mm and 38 but I carry a 45

I'd go with the 9 MM. The .40 Short and Weak all have a weird recoil. It would be better to a .45 ACP than a .40.
BUT if the .40 works for you go for it.

I'd get the 9mm for several reasons. It's plenty accurate for most people, it's cheap (Blazer Brass is still @6.00/box at Wal-Mart), and the round has a lot of slug weight options. 40SW is a better combat round, but in every other regard 9mm is a wiser choice. 40SW is also a deceptively hot round and not as fun to shoot as 9mm or 45ACP.

I would start off with the 9mm. It doesnt have as much recoil and the ammo is cheaper. Good choice on the Maker, S and W are good guns.

Look at the 380 auto also. It is the same size round as the 9mm, with a slightly shorter caseing. If it is for home defense, you wont find much of a difference between the two in stopping power, however, the 380 is a bit more gentle in recoil, especially in a smaller concealble weapon. Other names for this round are .380 Auto, 9mm Browning and 9mm short
