AVI isn't a video format, it's a file format - the video is encoded using whichever codec you choose and then a file's created which follows the rules for AVI. To play the file's contents you need the same codec on your PC as the one that was used to encode it in the first place. As someone else suggested, you can download a codec pack and hope it includes the right one, or you can use GSpot to look at the avi and tell you which one you need.

no, it means that you don't have the codecs needed to play that avi file. i highly recommend Ace Mega Codec Pack since it's the most complete i've found so far. Why on earth would u use Windows Vista instead of XP is beyond me, because the bugginess of Vista is well known. i won't upgrade to vista till they fix all the stuff wrong with it, and there is plenty, starting with the direct x 10 compatibility issues, and ending with codecs and so on and so forth.
using that codec pack i recommended should fix ur avi file problem, but Windows Vista sux hard imo. reinstall windows XP if u want all your games and programs to run. there are too many incompatibility issues in vista, and imo having a 3d moving background, and a nicer interface is not worth the trouble YET.

You need to download the appropriate codecs to play the .avi's. Try searching for codecs on Google, I don't remember the actual site for them.

All you need is the Divx codec. You can get it here: http://www.divx.com/
Be sure to just download and install the codec, you really don't need the player.

Ithink u can just choose to ignore teh warning about incompatible format warnings if u know for sure that the file is ok. If it still doesnt work u can use VLC media player..its free..and it just about plays every other format out there

use VLC player
or download a "codec pack":
http://www.free-codecs.com/download/Codec_Pack_All_in_1.htm
with the codec pack installed you should be able to play the file with windows media player, however I would suggest using vlc player
